Would you let a 12 year old go to the cinema on their own?

really on their own, or with a friend?

AnyFucker · 21/04/2009 18:42

If with a group of friends and if I (or another parent) dropped off and picked up, then yes.

LizzyIzzyLou · 21/04/2009 18:43

I used to go the early morning cinema at 12 with friends

On their own, being dropped off and picked up. Is not 12 for another 4 weeks, to be precise.

why don't you go with him/her if they have no-one to go with?

basementbear · 21/04/2009 18:44

With a group of friends, during the day time, yes. As long as I knew exactly where and what they were seeing. Like AF said, I'd probably feel happier doing the drop off/pick up too.

HuwEdwards · 21/04/2009 18:47

I would with a friend (and I'd offer, but not insist on dropping off and picking up).

If on their own, like fucker , I would offer to go with them.

Parent working from home, wanted to give DS, on half term, a treat whilst getting some work done themselves. Other parent thinks it's not on, hence Mumsnet jury being consulted!

Yes so long as-
-with a friend.
-Seeing a film which is suitable.

  • Dropped off just before it starts and picked up as they come out.
-Not at night- daytime or early evening performances only.
KingRolo · 21/04/2009 18:53

If DS is happy going on his own I really don't see why not, as long as it's during the day and you drop him off and pick him up.

abbierhodes · 21/04/2009 18:55

I wouldn't see going to the cinema alone as a treat. Is there not a friend they could go with?
I'd definitely allow them to go with a friend.

basementbear · 21/04/2009 18:58

Agree with abbierhodes, I wouldn't personally see that as a treat. If no-one else free to go with, better to rent a DVD as a treat surely!

unfitmother · 21/04/2009 18:58

He phoned his friend today but they're away. We went away last week.

Surely if that parent needs to get on with some work, a 12 yo can entertain himself for a couple of hours? He doesn't actually have to be removed from the house does he?

Nintendo? Wii? MSN? A DVD? Book a movie on Sky? Rent one from Blockbusters? Tell the boy to leave you be for a couple of hours? Its not difficult, he isn't a toddler who must be constantly watched/entertained.

saintmaybe · 21/04/2009 20:42

I like seeing films on my own. If my 12 yr old wanted to I'd be fine with it.

EnterStageLeft · 21/04/2009 20:45

Presumably this child goes to school on his own? I mean out of parental sight? And likely travels there are an back independently.

Seems reasonable to me. Can't he get the bus too?

EnterStageLeft · 21/04/2009 20:45

Though I guess it would depend on dais child's levels of maturity. So in summary... no idea!

EnterStageLeft · 21/04/2009 20:46

"said" child - that should say, sorry.
