should I lift her at night, or just give up!?

dd has been out of nappies during the day since she was 26mths, but has still needed them at night. I did try to get her out of night nappies 6mths ago, at her request, but she was very wet every night. She's now 3.11, we've had 6 nights without nappies, 1 dry, 4 with 1 wee, and 1 night with 2 huge wees! She really doesn't want to have nappies on again. Do you think I should lift her for a wee when we go to bed? Or just hope it gets better - I'm doing so much washing! She did stir last night when I went in to check she was dry when I went to bed, and I asked her if she wanted a wee, got a v.sleepy no in reply but the bed was still wet in the morning. Also in a fortnight we're going on holiday (Cornwall - yey!) to stay in a static caravan, there are washing facilities on site and I'll be taking plenty of sheets, but I could really do with her being mainly dry by then, do you think she might be, if she isn't do I just give up and stick her back in nappies? My HV said its not unusual for children to need nappies at night up to the age of 5.Its so hard to know what to do, day potty training was easy in comparison, done in a week!

It isn't uncommon for children to be wet until over 7.

I wouldn't lift.

Increase drinks up to about 5.30-6pm.

Wee before bed and then again just right before bed.

I use washables and since DH put DS2 in pull ups he gets up in the morning to do a poo as he can take them off. Still wet but it's a start.

Either accept you will wash every morning or nappies.

I did the washing for a bit but got fed up and it was months before DS1 was dry so glad I switched back. Not nice for him too to wake up in a wet bed.

DD is 5 and still in night time pull ups. She was dry before 2 so no corrolation afaiac.

littleb

i wouldnt bank on her being mainly dry in 2 weeks

sorry but it is unlikely...

if a huge problem take plenty of PJs (or will she sleep without any on?) and a pack of pampers bed mats....

at least then you can throw them out and not wash them (they arnt very enviornmentally friendly, im more of a fab of hippychick bed protector sheets, but when camping i think pampers bed mats are allowed lol!

yes, do wake her for a dream wee when you go to bed

basically they need to be producing a hormone in order to be dry at night which can switch on any time between 2 and 7 years, and even later in some children...

if this hasnt switched on then she wont have much chance...

how about convincing her to have PJ pants (pull ups with a diff name for older children?)
they are expensive but i think would be useful for a holiday.

I used pull ups for DSs but we called them bedtime pants.

If she's physically not ready, she's not ready and no amount of lifting will cure that.

If you lift her, make sure she's awake and you're not teaching her to wee in her sleep.

My dd1 was 5 before she was dry at night. We did away with her night time milk and we took her to the toilet at 11pm and nothing seemed to make a difference. She didn't even wake up if she wet the bed sometimes! I used those nightime nappies eventually and I agree with Soupdragon that it is a physical thing. It's like trying to teach them to walk when they are not ready.

Thanks for the advice. Its dd who is desperate to be out of nappies, rather than me being a pushy mum! Lately she's had a dry nappy in the morning several nights a week so we thought it was worth a try. I have lifted her the last couple of nights when I've gone to bed at 11ish, spoken to her so she is awake but very sleepy, both nights she's done a big wee, then straight back to sleep (telling me she loves me when I tuck her in )and then been dry, although last night she was also up at 2 after a bad dream so I took her for a wee then too. Thanks for the pj suggestion, although I've had her in nighties so that hasn't been a problem, I've tried the pampers bed mat things, but she does wriggle about alot and does miss them, she also managed to wee all over her duvet too, we have a spare luckily! Its difficult managing the washing when you are working though(luckily only part time). When she has wet the bed she's slept through, so I've only known in the morning, no time to wash sheets etc and get them on the line before I leave for work, bit of a headache if the duvet is wet too. I'll carry on with lifting and see how we get on. Presumably once shes into a routine I gradually lift her earlier and earlier until shes going right through?
