Hi everyone,

I am now a Mum to toddler again after many years and find I worry so much more than I used to.DS loves food especially fruit which of course I encourage but am so worried of choking. Our fruit bowl is always full and he likes to reach up and grab some now and then.He loves apples especially but I still worry even when I chop them up and supervise him at the table. What do you guys do?

DD (2.6yo) eats apples whole, but often needs the first bite doing to start her off as she slipped and smashed her two front teeth six months ago.

wonderingwondering · 16/04/2009 21:37

I always chop grapes, even for my five yr old, I read they are the perfect size and shape to block a child's airway. I even chopped up four whole bags of grapes for a pre-school age party I volunteered at, I could see the other helpers thought I was barmy.

nappyzonecannotcycleuphill · 16/04/2009 21:37

i chop up grapes well just in hlf for my 2yr old, apples wise i either use my applecorer thts splits into say 8 segments (this is if i want some or dd) or i take a bite and hand him the whole thing but he protests at putting last bit in bin hence i segment them to avoid this fight!

My dd3 who is 18 months eats the whole thing, stalk and all. I have to do the first bite and then after that she manages fine, she also loves graps but wont let us cut them in half, they have to be whole or she wont eat them.

stroppyknickers · 16/04/2009 21:40

I grate apples for ds (18 mths)

clayre · 16/04/2009 21:42

when mine were that age i used to just core apples and pears and let them get on with it, never ever chopped a grape, i hadnt even thought about that till i joined mumsnet and dd was 4 and ds was 2 so a bit late for chopping fruit

EldonAve · 16/04/2009 21:43

I just peel the apples

lizziemun · 16/04/2009 21:55

DD2 is 19mth and climbsup to the fruit bowl to get apples. She eats them whole although she does sometimes spit the skin out.

Although i am always around, but this is to make sure i wash her hands and face before she touches me as i am allergic to apples.

Balthamos · 16/04/2009 23:24

Stroppyknickers: I grate them too. I am very paranoid about a chunk breaking off easily and choking DD (20 months). Happened to a kid when I was little and the horror of it has stayed with me ever since. She eats everything else whole (except grapes). But apples are a fear of mine!

LissyGlitter · 16/04/2009 23:30

My dd (2.2) eats apples whole, even eats most of the core. I had one as well the other day and left my core, she saw and started saying "more apple, more apple" when I said there wasn't any more she just smiled, pointed at my core and said "mummy share"

UniS · 17/04/2009 16:02

Certainly did, he would eat apples even when he would not eat any other fruit or veg. I used to give him one in the pushchair to keep him busy while shopping. Back when Boy was 2 he would eat the lot skin, core and all, NOW he insists on my peeling them...

claireybee · 17/04/2009 16:14

Both of mine (dd 2.10, ds 16months) eat apples, either whole or chopped into segments

minxofmancunia · 17/04/2009 16:20

dd 2.6 eats apples she loves them, either whole or cut up into segments.

I cut grapes in half for her, dh doesn't they terrify me but I do have a bit of a "thing" about choking. Once did CBT on a girl who wouldn't swallow because of choking fear and only ate ready brek etc. Her Mum was nuerotic about it (like me) so I'm trying to rein it in a bit (ie not vocalise "no she might choke" too regularly).

By the time she finished treatment she was eating roast dinners and fish and chips tho (patient not dd)

MrsTittleMouse · 17/04/2009 16:24

I give apple in quarters. Mind you, whn DD1 was one, she grabbed an apple at my Dad's house and ate it core, pips and all with no problems. She did a bit of choking when she was weaning because she was such a greedy guts. She did not take mouth-sized bites! But I assumed that turning her upside down and slapping her on the back was a normal part of the process. Which I suppose is a bit strange as DD1 almost died at birth and I was paranoid about a lot of other things.

SouthernLights · 17/04/2009 16:46

My DD is 7.5 months and has apple slices. She uses her two bottom teeth to scrape off the fruit and spits out any skin that gets into her mouth! She likes dried apple too - the rings are easy for her to hold.

Rewards · 19/04/2009 19:58

my son has just turned 2 and has apples whole, grapes cut in half, banannas whole - or if fed up eating it i then mash.

thisisyesterday · 19/04/2009 20:06

haven't read whole thread so apologies if this has already been pointed out, but your child is more likely to choke on something you have cut into small bits than by giving him a whole apple.
with a whole apple the child will bite off a bit he can manage (for the most part)
offering chunks means that he isn't in control of how much goes in, and you also risk the "stuff as much in as possible" syndrome that my son has

ds2 is coming up for 18 months and happily munches on whole apples

CoffeeAndCarrotCake · 19/04/2009 22:36

Yup - although all my friends remind me that I used to cut up grapes for my PFB DD up until she was about 18months.

Into 16ths.

cupcake78 · 21/04/2009 11:46

DS is 19mths old and will only eat apples if I give them to him whole! He loves them. Same with pears and bananas! He usually takes one out and brings it too me so I say yes you can have it and he munches away.

Discovered today he had been through the fruit bowl this morning and taken a bite out of three pears and two apples, but at least he put them back in the bowl and didn't throw them on the floor

I think we have some work to do on that one!

cupcake78 · 21/04/2009 11:50

Oh and he eats the lot, core, pips everything. I save my nervous energy for his fasination with moving wheels . He particularly likes moving buses and white vans.

Ewe · 21/04/2009 11:54

My DD 13 months gives a whole apple a good try, skin off though.

I don't really get the grapes thing unless you all have really small grapes, I just can't work out the logistics of choking risk any more than anything else?

Ledodgy · 21/04/2009 12:00

My 15 month old eats whole un-peeled apples. I always cut up grapes though as they are just the right size to block small windpipe.

Nemoandthefishes · 21/04/2009 12:02

I give all of mine apples whole but chop grapes for 2 +3yr old

goldrock · 21/04/2009 12:50

My 13 momth old DS kept himself fully occupied during a trip to Tesco this morning by eating an apple whole although we did leave a trail of chewed up and spat out bits behind us. Before anyone asks, it was one that he picked up at home before we left but I did wonder if anyone would ask if we'd paid for it.

Alishanty · 21/04/2009 14:01

I don't believe in giving really young babies whole pieces of food as I do think it presents a choking risk but I'm sure I haven't chopped anything like apples/grapes up since ds was about 2. In fact he gets quite irate if I even attempt to!
