Hey I am starting a Nursing diploma in september and was just wondering if any student nurses culd give me an idea of the financial help available. I am a single mum to DD 14 months and get IS, HB and council Tax paid and get CTC. What will change and what will go and what will i get instad? Is it feasible to do it without any other income or help from family/partner? And are there any other new nurses out there? I am doing mental health branch at DMU

I did this a couple of years ago, you will be eligible for full tuition fee payment which the NHS pay directly to your Uni/college, on top of this you will get a bursary which is dependant on your income. You can still claim child tax credit and the bursary will cover 85% of any childcare fees. You can claim additional help from the Uni. You won't have to pay council tax as you will be a full time student and may be able to get housing benefit but this depends on the bursary. It is managable to do the course without income from a partner, I did paediatric nursing but found the chidcare for the shifts really difficult.
The NHS bursary unit has a web site you can look at, it will give you a guestimate of what you could get.

You won't get Income support. You will still get HB and CTC. Not sure about getting council tax paid. You can apply for a contingency fund from your specific uni and you can get a lone parent grant too.

If you are the only adult in your home you will not have to pay council tax.

Good luck with your studies
