My Ds is 3.7 and has been dry and clean in the day for at least 8mths.

His nappies in the morning are still pretty heavy but i wonder how much of it is laziness ie he knows nappy is there iyswim.

So do I leave it till nappy is dry at night or just go for it and see what happens??

Apparently peeing during the night is down to a physical maturity and not an age thing IYKWIM. They need to have reached the physical maturation to recognise and respond to a hromone which is released so if he doesn't have a dry nappy at night he aint ready.

CompareTheMeerkat · 08/04/2009 21:44

I waited until DS and DD had had a week or two of dry nappies at night before stopping night nappies.

simpson · 08/04/2009 21:47

That is what I wanted to do TBH.

but sometimes he wakes up at 5/6am but is quite happy to stay in bed and sing/talk to himself etc till I get him up at 7.30 ish and I wonder how much of the wee is done when he is awake iyswim.

My son is 3 and i think we are in a similar situation he is toilet trained - pretty much totally less than 1 accident a month and pees standing up etc.
But has soaked diapers every morning - I suspect he wees because he can in them ifykwim. If I put him in a diaper now he would pee in it and tell me that's what they are for .
I am taking the diaper off tonight ....

ZoeC · 09/04/2009 14:48

I wouldn't until they wake to go in the night, my dd is 4 and she can't go without a nappy at night - I have even tried on a couple of occasions and found her wet before midnight, and she didn't wake at all - she hadn't noticed in the slightest so she isn't ready.

Some nights she is dry, but I think that is more her bladder's ability to wait rather than anything else tbh.

timmette · 09/04/2009 15:05

You may be right about waiting for dry ones - but I'll try it for a week and see how we go if not back to diapers - I am just a bit when he tells me he wears nappies so he can wee in his bed...

simpson · 09/04/2009 15:43

LOL Timmette my DS says the same thing

Good luck tonight!!!

Let me know how you get on

I have about 10 nappies left. I think I am going to not buy anymore then try and see how we get on.

I will also give it a week....

Well I have actually run out of diapers - so he has no choice - lol.
He did his afternoon nap for 2 hours without peeing.

simpson · 09/04/2009 16:09

I wish DS still had an afternoon nap

On the odd time he has fallen asleep in the car he has never had an accident.

Fingers crossed for you!!

am trying with dd(4) atm.

4 days in and;

day 1... dry
day 2... wet
day 3... dry but climbd back into bed at 9am and wet it then
day4... dry but wet herself running to the loo this morning, but she'd been asleep 13.5 hours so counting this as a success

i'm giving it a few days as i want to test how much is inabilty and how much is down to her just being used to having the security of the nappy. if it starts to go downhill i'll put her back in her minki yo-yos as she can get up and pull those down to go loo during the night and they don't hold much so not much security for her iyswim?

simpson · 09/04/2009 19:43

What do you guys do at night time?

Do you have potty in room or let them find the loo themselves??

OP posts:
Seona1973 · 09/04/2009 19:54

I never used a potty in the room so my lo's would need to find the toilet in the night. We have a plug in nightlight thing in a socket in the hall so it isnt in total darkness. DD (5 1/2 years) takes herself to the toilet now if she needs it but at the start would come and get me to go with her (she was night dry at the age of 3 when she decided she didnt want to wear nappies at night any more). DS is 2 1/2 and wears a nappy at night still but it is dry most mornings. He only went into a big bed a few weeks ago but hasnt come out it or his room once yet and hasnt shouted that he needs a pee in the night - I will have to try him without a nappy soon but just havent bitten the bullet yet.

jelliebelly · 09/04/2009 19:55

We moved from nappies to Huggies night time pull ups and discovered that ds was dry all night and then did a huge wee when he woke up. He now shouts to say he needs to go for a wee when he wakes up (too lazy to actually get up and go by himself ). Trouble is that this means we are all up at 6.30am when he wakes up whereas before he would stay in bed quite happily until 7.30ish

simpson · 09/04/2009 19:58

jelliebelly - this is my fear ATM he is quite happy to stay in bed till gone 8

Are huggies night time pull ups different to normal ones??

Seona - We have one of those night lights that pulls out to be a torch so maybe he will use that....

DS is 3.5 now and started going without nappies in Jan.

He has had accidents obviously but for the whole he was dry straight away. He was doing the old trick of being dry during the night and then weeing first thing in the morning because he couldn't be bothered to stop playing

I stopped any drinks an hour before bed and made sure a trip to the toliet became part of the bed time rotine. If a drink clse to bedtime was unavoidabe then I would wake him to have a quick wee before I went to bed.

I'ts been a total success, now I just have to start toilet training DD2 who's 22months. Phew when will it end.

Oh and I 100% recommend buying a waterproof fitted bed sheet, worth every penny.

eandh · 09/04/2009 20:07

dd1 was dry in the day at 2.1 but took till last year (she was 3.10) before we had dry nappies in the monring even then we had about 4 accidents the first month

dd2 is 2.3 trained herself in the day last month and refuses a nappy at all now, if I put one on her at night she takes it off. She has a wee before bed at 6pm and then most nights goes through until 6.30 in the morning and in the last 2 weeks (since we gave up on putting the nappy on at night) no accidents and the 2 times shes got up for a wee shes just called me/dh and we have sat her on the loo and shes gone straight back to her bed and sleep.

In fact she has been a complete dream about the whole thing so feeling very proud of her (although I have to do a 2 hour car journey with both dd's on my own tomorrow and have visions of her telling me she needs a wee whilst I am on teh motorway!!

PinkTulips · 10/04/2009 23:25

well dd is back in her cotton training pants tonight as i've run out of bed sheets for her bed! she was wet this morning and when i asked her if she woke up wet or peed when she woke she said se woke up wet so no point forcing it if she's not ready

bizarrely ds1 is being potty trained atm and has had dry nappies a few mornings so it looks like he'll be dry at night before her!

simpson · 11/04/2009 21:47

Timmette - how did you get on?

Pink tulips - how old is DD?

Still not braved it, have about 8 nappies left...then will try.

PinkTulips · 11/04/2009 23:52

she's 4 since january. we've had huge issues with her wetting herself during the day too though so am starting to lose the will to live dealing with her urine at this point

easier to deal with damp nappies than soaked sheets..... i have my doubts about whether she really wet herself in her sleep.... see my earlier post about her climbing back into bed to wet it the other day, she's been know to take her nappy off to pee in the bed

but better for all our sakes if i use the zen approach and pretned i don't care and just leave her in nappies til she grows out of it [sigh]
