already posted this in children's health but no response so damnit I'm posting again...

i know she might not get it but i don't think I've had it so I won't have passed on any immunity to her.
any got any experience of measles in newborns? can you give them anything for fever?
am beside myself already and if she does have it it won't emerge til next week- please somebody slap me and tell me to get a grip or reassure me or something

Are you sure you haven't either had it or had a jab? How old are you? If you are as ancient as me (38) it would be unusual for you not to have immunity (even if vaccinated there would have been enough measles around for you to have had lots of natural 'boosters').

If you are sure you haven't I'd see your GP to ask for an antibody test (perhaps for you?) I'm not sure how long it takes, but they can give gamma globulin as a prophylaxis. I don't know how often they use it, or when, or whether it would be appropriate but it would be a conversation worth having with a doctor I think.

How long was the exposure and does the other child definitely have measles?

mrsturnip · 08/04/2009 12:12

Measles vaccination wasn't given routinely until introduction of the MMR in the 80s. Although there was a vaccine around I wasn't given it in the 70's for example.

Don't worry if you're 38. There was so much measles around in our childhood (I had a good dose) that unless you lived as a hermit you can pretty much guarantee that you will have immunity of some sort in some way. I never had chickenpox, but have immunity.

Worth talking through options etc with the HV, but I think given your age () it is very likely that you have immunity.

mrsturnip · 08/04/2009 12:19

But do get answers you are happy with, because gamma globulin is a possibility, as I said I don't know when or why they use it, but you could certainly ask.

My chickenpox antibody titre results (I was exposed when pregnant) came back quickly.

thanks mrs t
the next 10 days or so are going to seem very long though

she saw the infected child last fri so i guess if she's still ok by a week on friday she should be ok
i'll have bitten my fingernails up to my elbows by then though

hope the blooming HV calls me back

Has the infected child been clinically confirmed and when did the rash start for the child? They do misdx measles quite a lot these days as they don't see much of it.

mrsturnip · 08/04/2009 12:23

You see I think you could have antibody titre results back on you in 4 or 5 days, which would give time to give prophylactic treatment if needed.

mrsturnip · 08/04/2009 12:27

oh don't listen to me about timings. Here's some info about gamma globulin. I would ask HV

CatIsSleepy · 08/04/2009 13:10

ok thanks mrs t
will ring the HV again this pm if no-one gets back to me

have spoken to my mum now-she thinks i was immunised which has made me feel a bit better...

so you're probably right belgianbun...just checked myself and measles vaccines were introduced in 1968. I was born in 1971 so would have been offered it. uptake was low apparently but 2 of my older sisters had had measles so i guess my mum would have been pretty keen to get me vaccinated.
and thank god i'm breast-feeding her!
