Can anyone recommend cloth nappies for a heavy wetter?

I'd really appreciate some recommendations for reusable nappies for a heavy wetting boy for daytime and overnight. I've been using Fuzzi Bunz with an extra bamboo booster, and Bummis wraps with prefolds and a bamboo booster for a few months now.
Nothing lasts more than 2 hours and DS ends up with wet patches around his waist if I don't change him frequently enough, although he doesn't complain. I don't want to add more boosters because the nappies are already bulky enough that he has to move up a clothing size a month early and I don't think detergent build-up is the problem as they soak up everything OK at the front (the back stays dry).
I don't want to go back to disposables full time even though they last 3-4 hours, but I use them overnight so that we all get a good night's sleep

Wee Notions Night Notions are unbelievably absorbent. Both my boys used to leak through pampers overnight every so often - there is no hint of it in these. The inserts that go with them are the key I think - don't buy one without the inserts.
I just use fleece or wool wraps over them.

Mine aren't too heavy wetting of a day - so I use ittis and wonderoos mainly. But fluffles or BBH (bamboo) are also quite absorbent (fluffles have a pocket too add extra boosting). Maybe adding some microfibre (there are packs of 4 cloths in poundland) would help to absorb quickly and let moisture spread to the back of the nappy to be absorbed?

could it be the wrap rather than the nappy?

DS isn't particularly heavy wetting but we use a heavily boosted bamboo or hemp overnight and he is fine. The only time we have had leakages is when we used a rubbish wrap (can't remember which) or when the wrap wasn't done up properly.

of a day I mainly use motherease airflow wraps if I use 2 parters

you need to change the material you are using. IME bamboo isnt brilliant for heavy wetters, and you need hemp.
i find the easy peasy hemp inserts are the best and the cheapest, however i do have some of these Stuffins by Happy Heinysr
and they are good because you can concentrate the bulk where needed, therefore keeping the rest of the nappy quite slim.

we currently use either a bamboo or microfibre (very thin one) with a hemp insert underneath and this works very well i can get about 4-5 hours out of this combination.

i put DD in a microfibre and bamboo boostered nappy today as all the hemp inserts were in the wash and she went through it in 35 minutes

honest give hemp a try

My first instinct when I read your post was that the backs shouldn't be dry if you are getting leaks - I think something is going wrong there.

I second what Natty said about hemp, although I wouldn't personally use microfiber on a heavy wetter if you can avoid it as once it gets very wet it won't keep the wee in - it will sort of squish out if you see what I mean. I would defiantly try and avoid it at night. We only really use MF when everything else is in the wash.

I find the absolute best combo of inserts for daytime pockets is an easy peasy hemp insert, wraped in pettis dessous bamboo insert. Bamboo is still very absorbant, and unlike hemp, it stays nice and soft in hard water. I can't use hemp that isn't going in/under something because it goes to hard and crunchy. Hence why I couldn't use Ellas house nappies or something like that.

I know it is all so confusing to get to grips with, and the hardest thing is that everybody finds that different things work for them. So I would only buy one of something at a time and give it ago.

At night time, the only thing we have found that works without having a massive bum is an upsey daisy night nappy in french soy, it is so slim fitting and soft and absorbant - I love it! At the moment we are using under a ME airflow but when she grows out of them we will get some woolies as these help allow the nappy to breath.

I hope that helps a bit. I wish I had known all this when I first started up with washables - I don't think I would have ever bought a cotton nappy.

Hemp and bamboo is defiantly the way to go if you have a heavy wetter. I am hoping I can use all my (hundreds) microfibre inserts for DD2 when she is born as the newborn won't need as much absorbency.

DD does MASSIVE wees...

We use terry squares, quite thick ones, with wither folded flanel or booster type thing inside. Also use liner. Well fitting wrap is the way forward I think.

What a bummer fo you

soon2befamilyof4 · 07/04/2009 22:58

mumble - how old is your DD and how often do you have to change her? Just interested because if I were to use a terry square on DD - it would last about half hour even if boosted with a flannel.

TheNatty · 07/04/2009 23:12

lol soon same here! i have tried terry squares made of hemp.. about an hour.

we have the wettist babies this side of the channel i reckon

soon2befamilyof4 · 08/04/2009 09:36

Lol. You would think a hemp one would be OK!

mumblecrumble · 08/04/2009 17:10

Maybe my dd isn;t such a big wetter! Sppose its hard to compare if you only have one kid!

She's 19 months, change every 2/3 hours.

I humbly bow out of this thread

good luck!

soon2befamilyof4 · 08/04/2009 20:48

mumble - honestly, you would know if you had a heavy wetter! It has taken a long time to work out what works for us. Disposables would only last about 2 hours on my DD before leaking and we have puddles if in a disposable at night. Lol.

hopeful3 · 08/04/2009 22:25

Thanks for all the help Hemp sounds like the way to go and maybe the Wee Notions, too.
Is there anywhere reliable apart from this site for buying second hand in case they don't work out?
I've also seen some comments on Thirsties and Bum Genius on other threads but I don't know much about them.
I never thought doing this would be so complicated! And now my head hurts.

Bumgenious are fab, but again, on a heavy wetter you would probably need your own inserts - hemp and/or bamboo.

If you go for anything hemp it needs to be topped with something else because although it absorbs lots - it is slow to absorb.

TheNatty · 09/04/2009 22:49

depends on the child tho soon, i personally dont bother and dont have a problem.

i would say if you are buying BG second hand to be careful as they are not all great quaality, i have had some really rough looking ones sent to me in 'good condition'
