hurray hurray, we're on our way (finally).

It's day 3 and DS2 hasn't had an accident in the house for 24 hours!
Right now he is naked from waist down. One of us is with him all the time gently reminding him to "point to the potty" so he is aware of where he is. He is taking himself to it and weeing and also pooing.

We are rewarding him with "goodie bars" so he's barely eating any meals but at least they are pretty good for him!

He has some mild special needs language-wise so is quite reliant on visual cues.

Is the next step

  1. to put "big boy" pants on but keep the same close watch and joyful approval of each wee/poo.
or
  1. to move the potty further away eg to the door of each room but keep him naked?

I'm thinking 1. And I'm thinking now maybe only snack reward if he takes the pants down. And maybe to get something less filling than goodie bars!

If anyone's read Gina or other potty gurus or simply has experience, please advise!

Three days ago DS (nearly 3) decided to wear pants all by himself. He has known where they are for ages and that he should wear them, but we never made a big deal about it. We got the 'everybody poos' book and DH and I both had an open-door policy when we went to the toilet at home.

We brought him a comic the first day to show how happy we were. The second day I printed a sticker chart and said he could have 1 sticker for a wee in the potty and 2 for a poo. When he has 6 stickers he choses his treat. He actually choses small things, like some sweets.

Perhaps a reward for several wees/poos, not for each one???

Don't know if that would help, I am not a guru, I have not read any books or followed advice, it's what we throught of and it just seemed right for us. HTH!

thanks. DH encouraged him to put on big boy pants this morning but he was a bit resistant so we'll just repeat for another day but perhaps try to fade out the goodie bars.

I started Potty Training my DS who is nearly 3 years old a week ago as he started to initiate an interest in the potty. He has done really well but when out playing he forgets and has accidents. Its the same at nursery, indoors he is generally very good but when outside and when he is tired he can't be bothered with the potty and will not say that he needs a wee/poo. I was out with him recently and made him sit on the potette even if he was reluctant to and he remained dry throughout the afternoon. I think Potty training is very hard and takes time. My DS does'nt seem that bothered if his big boy pants are wet/pooey, so I think it will take a few more months for him to get this potty business!!!!

I think we'd have been in that position too Kellsie at 2.11. Boys average 3.2 in the USA according to a site I saw the other day

We went outside for a walk today (couldn't face being cooped up all day) and I took the potty with me. Set it down in the public toilet and DS2 said he'd rather use the toilet and proceeded to do so. Amazing!

Now watching bugs bunny with trousers on ....can he carry this off too?

finally potty trained ds about 2 months after 3rd birthday, i tried carrying a potty round but for some reason he only used it at home and preferred the toilet when out and about, and as for pants i just stopped nappies completely during the day and went for the hard option of carrying 3 spare outfits and going in every toilet we walked past and constantly asking him if he needed the toilet, at first he thought i was just a nasty mummy but within 2 weeks he was completely dry in the day and the only another month till he was dry at night.

ah... bugs bunny was a step too far. In the last three days we've only had 3 accidents. All whilst watching bugs bunny.

Shoot the wabbit!
