DS2 3yr 3m won't sit on potty or toilet

am at my wits end, i know i should wait for him, but how long???

HV is no help, Tate just refuses point blank to sit on potty and is 'scared of monsters' in the toilet, we have tried a special seat, stickers, promise of rewards, making it fun, sitting with mummy/daddy, flushing loo for us etc....

he gets extremely distressed if we leave him nappy less and begs for a nappy to go on. if we leave him nappyless eventually he will just wet after alot of tears and he doesn't mind being wet so its no incentive. i had no problems whatsoever with ds1 but maybe that he was in nursery three full days a week. Tate sees his friends use toilet at nursery and knows his friends don't wear nappies. i know i should just let him wait til he's ready but it makes me feel like i've failed that he's still in nappies when he's so forward in every other way. ds3 is 21m and i just cannot bear to have to go through all this again!!!!

what do you do with one that refuses??

Let him wee standing up. Explain to him how a toilet works, take him to a hardware store if necessary. Explain about where his wee/poo will go. See if you can get this book from your library. Children are curious and if they learn something new, it helps remove fears and makes them want to participate.

if he does it once then the fear will be broken i guess as then he'll know theres nothing to fear
could you go all out and get a big toy and sit it in a clear box in the bathroom and tell him that he can have it when he goes and sits on the loo and does a wee for the first time?

thats a really good idea. i could try that. he actually stood with his willie out ready to pee by toilet tonight. a huge advancement. lots and lots of praise. i might try that tho as he's desperate for a toy atm i keep telling him we can go to toy shop when he's done wee wee on toilet.
