August children going to school

Right help me out here ladies

ds1 went to school last year. dd going this year. But she will only just be 4 as her birthday is 28 August. Last year the school had a policy of half days for non Winter born children until they went full time in January.

This year they have offered dd a full time place (as per current education policy I think). But I can discuss other options with them. I am not working atm as am on mat leave with ds2 but will be doing three days from September when she starts school.

What do I do? Is she going to cope with full days or do I ask for her to go for half days as per her brother? The other option is to keep her out entirely and leave her in preschool until January but I don't think she'll like this much as it will be full of 2 year olds just starting and her friends will be going to school.

She has been going to a combination of private nursery and preschool up to this point.

Any experiences of children this young going to school would be very welcome....

Petifilou my DS1 has exactly the same birth date as your DD, he is in year 1 now and he is fine.
I worried myself stupid before he started but he settled OK, I would say the whole of reception year he was perfectly happy but was tired and frankly hadn't got much clue as to all the school stuff, handing in letters etc. The school was flexible and I could have sent him 1/2 days but since I was working that would have been tricky, one thing they did say that they tend to do the core literacy and numeracy in the mornings so if the child only went in the morning they would miss the fun stuff so that may be worth checking if you think DD needs to only go part time.

Do you need school's permission just to do half days until after Xmas? My DD is a Nov birthday so will be nearly 5 when she starts school but I don't want her doing a full week until after Xmas.

Florence - I have just raised any concerns I have with the school etc about him coping and it was them who suggested a couple of half days a week.

DD's an August baby too. She was definitely ready for school and had been almost full time at nursery for a year. We weren't given the option so she had to go back to being a 'baby' when she started in Reception; couldn't wear the uniform, had to go home at lunch time etc. She was mortified and miserable. (It was a horrible school as it turned out and we moved her.)

I have no doubt that she would have been fine full time. Can they start her full time (if that's what she wants) and then switch her to pt if it's too much for her?
