Help with English phonics

Hello - I have a question on behalf of a friend of mine. Her DD, 6 and v. bright, is having some problems with reading and spelling. She writes certain words more the way they're pronounced than the way they are correctly written, e.g. sistar/sister, brodar/brother. Her parents cannot help much with this because English is not their mother tongue, and TBH their English accent or spelling is not very good. I cannot help because I have a strong accent too, and I suspect what my friend's DD really needs is a good phonics DVD to practise at home, on top of what she does at school. Any suggestions? Thank you
