What can I soak smelly cotton nappies in?

Hi all

DD's clean cotton nappies smell like the very divil, and probably need a good soaking.

Is napisan best or can I use something stronger/a combination of something? (Saw the recommendation for vinegar in previous thread.)

Thanks!

I used to put tea tree oil in the nappy bin, so maybe a dash of that?

How are you washing them? A good hot wash should sort them out, maybe a scoop of napisan and a drop of tea tree in with the washing powder? And then give them and extra rinse?

Thanks - will try tea tree! soon2be have been washing them at 90 degrees but still smell rank! it is my fault for leaving them unsoaked and dirty for a week. Do you think teatree + vinegar + napisan will cause an explosion?

Oh I see - didn't realise they were left for a week. I am not a fan of soaking TBH but it might be needed if left for a week. Or you could hang them out on the line for a few days (regardless of rain) and then wash again?

I chuck mine in a bucket in the bath, wash my hands over them so they're soaking in warm soapy water & add a few drops of tea tree if they'll be soaking for longer than 24 hours (ie. if dd2 is going to be with proper nappy refusenik but otherwise lovely CM that day...).

& agree drying outside definitely helps.

Incidentally dh tells me that napisan + vinegar is A VERY BAD IDEA so definitely will avoid. I think will try vinegar first on its own and then the tree tea option.

Thanks all!

white vinegar and cold water. Mix a 500ml bottle of white with half a bucket of cold water and soak rinsed nappies overnight. Then wash as usual. Soak with tea tree oil- few drops in water in bucket. Also I saw mention of using full doses of bio detergent to make sure there's enough in there to wash properly or something?
And doesnt bambinex do a nappy washing powder now?
