Tots bots have started to REEK. What can I do?

My cotton tos bots have started to smell really bad whenever ds wees in them. I had thought the paper liner was maybe to blame but i have tried for one day without them and I have the same problem. It really is not nice. I wash them with one tablet of fairy, at 60 with a prewash, and a spin afterwards. I then leave them on an airer to dry inside. Can I do anything to stop them smelling?

Try a biological poweder ... assuming you havent got any allergy issues.

Also adding distilled vinegar to the wash can help.

Is your LO teething as somepeople think this makes a difference.

If this all fails you can strip the nappies (actually I'm not sure what this entails) but there are loads of threads on this.

Hope this helps

I would run them at 90 degrees without washing powder to give them a really good wash through. Washing powder can built up in the material which can smell quickly.

Ah, yes he is teething, I hadn't realised this would make a difference. I don't really want to change powder, as he does have skin issues and last time we switched to a different brand, which was still non bio, it did affect him. Fairy have me over a barrel I will try the vinegar. Is it really OK to wash them at such a high temperature? The label says 60 and I don't want to ruin them as I can't afford to replace them.

I think the urine can be a bit stronger when teething.

I've never washed mine at 90 either as I think its a bit high for the velcro on a regular basis, but I'm sure an occasional wash wont bring them to much harm.

I used totsbots and Fairy - although I did add some nappywash to the wash. However, this time of year I would be trying to line dry whenever possible - a good flap about in the sunshine does them a lot of good. (I nearly always washed at 40 with a very occasional wash at 60)

I don't have an outside line I might see if I can take a load to a friends house tomorrow though. Where would I buy distilled vinegar? Would I be able to buy it in the supermarket?

Yes, any old supermarket.

Its clear ... DO NOT BUY THE BROWN STUFF YOU PUT ON CHIPS

and comes in glass bottles 500ml size for about 50p.

Have a look with all the ketchups and pickles

littlelamb · 27/03/2009 13:17

Do I add it to the drawer with the powder? Or put it straight into the drum?

Add a good old slosh in the compartment you would use for fabric conditioner.

Where do you live? Does your local council participate in the free nappy voucher scheme? If so you could get some new ones free! I'm in Hackney, and we can get a voucher for over £50 to spend on reusable nappies.

Info on the London scheme is at www.realnappiesforlondon.org.uk

I guess you could find info on other ones by Googling.

I had this with my tots bots bamboozles recently. Basically I switched washing them every three days to every four days and this was when I noticed them smelling "unclean" and worse when weed on. Once I swopped back to every three days the problem went away, so think there was basically too many in the macnhine for them to wash / rinse off properly. However it could also bee teething wee, or possibly a fungal infection - has your lo had a thrush like nappy rash recently?
