My washing machine smells of wee and poo

Well, it smells horrible and I'm pretty sure it's the nappies. I had no trouble when it was just toddler nappies, but now it's pre-weaning baby too it's terrible. I guess because more poo gets into the machine (I don't get on with liners and bf baby poo doesn't seem to rinse off in the loo, so pretty much all the baby poo goes in the machine).

I usually wash at 40 degrees, with a 60 degree about once a month. I use non-bio liquid. If I do a 90 degree wash with bio liquid the smell goes away, but comes back as soon as I've done another load of dirty nappies. I've tried white vinegar but that made no difference.

Any suggestions? Would bio liquid help? I guess I could do an extra rinse and bio liquid - neither child has particularly senstive skin and the baby is 5 months now. Should I get my act together and separate out the wraps, and then be able to do the nappies at 60 all the time? Is liners the only answer? They just seem to make the poo go everywhere and keep his bum wetter (nappies are fluffles with fleece lining which is great at keeping relatively dry)

You do seem to need to lose some of the poo before it hits the machine! More detergent will just build up in the fleece and make it less absorbent and weirdly will make them smell more! Maybe until his poo gets more solid pop some fleece liners into the nappy to catch most of the poo - you could then sluice these more effectively in the loo before putting them into your bucket. Your nappies themselves will haev less poo on!

I use fuzzis most of the time without liners and I shake the poo into the toilet. Sometimes dh just chucks them in the bucket and it goes into the machine and makes poo balls at the front!!! weird! I then wipe these out with toilet roll and around the rim and chuck the machine on a hot wash with maybe just some milton or nappy fresh.

Good luck!

Check the pump filter thing, should be accessible at the bottom front of the machine.

Do a 90 wash with a full dose of bio powder, I keep ariel just for this.

Try not to use "quick" or economy washes too often as they use fewer rinses.

Wipe around the rubber door seal thing, it can get a bit yucky in the folds.

Try switching to washing with powder instead of liquid, I think I remember reading a while ago that powder is better for your machine as liquid leaves a residue or something

why not just do them at 60 degrees for now (or even 90) if that gets rid of it.

You can always switch back to 40 once more solid.

Personally i always do nappies at 60 as that is the temp required to kill germs.

I do my nappy wash at 60 everytime with no proble and that includes wraps. If very messy we do a rinse cycle before the wash so that it gets the worst off and THEN does a full 60 cycle. I use one bold 2 in 1 tablet and never have any smells. I then wash on empty about once a month

I use cotton nappies from tots bots and have never had a smelly machine. I definitely agree with shirleyL - try using powder instead of liquid.
I use only cheap economy non-bio powder, nowt special! Still works the same - and friends have commented on how 'brilliant white' my nappies still are!
Try using liners to remove the majority of the poo first.
Are you dry or wet pailing them?
Also agree - try adding in an extra rinse cycle to your maching every now and again if messy.
