Silly question but... nappies leaking at night for 2yo DD?

I know this is probably a silly question but...

For the last couple of weeks, DD1 (2.1) has woken up a bit wet every morning. It's not disturbing her night, I'm guessing it happened quite shortly before she would have woken up anyway (in her time of coming round from sleep and probably having a wee). It's obviously creating a huge amount of washing.

She has always worn Pampers nappies and we've never had a problem before. She is currently wearing a 4+ (she's a very very slim, small 2yo), the same size as her 10 month old sister.

I thought maybe she needed a larger size so tried size 5 for the night and still leaking.

Does she need a smaller size? Try a different make?

Nappies are expensive so I would like to know what to try before I spend more money on various different nappies. Anyone else found this happening?

I know I know, I shouldn't find this so difficult. I think I need a cup of tea. And about 2 years' worth of sleep

I would suggest putting her to bed at normal time, and then before you go to bed a few hours later, change her nappy.

This whole sudden nappy leaking thing is so strange - I've been having the same problem with my 25 month old DS for a couple of months now and just can't seem to fix it. I've tried Huggies, Pampers and Tesco brand nappies at night using both his normal size (4+) and a size up, but all to no avail. I haven't tried a smaller size but I honestly don't think this will do the trick as a 4+ has been fine for the last year, night and day. I did the changing before I went to bed as well which was around 10:30 pm (he goes to bed at 8 pm) which sometimes helped, sometimes not. I even went through a stage of putting a Tesco size 5 on over a Pampers size 4+ which again didn't always work either. The only thing that I find normally helps is for him not to drink too much after 5 pm which is hardly ideal really. My DS sleeps on his tummy mostly quite often with his bum in the air, and I find that the leaks are almost always at the top, more rarely from the sides.

Oh Snooch, your DS sounds just the same as DD1 (they are the same age, wear the same nappy size and she also sleeps on her tummy with her bum in the air). The leak is often down one leg which makes me think it's as she wakes up in the morning and she sits up?? I have no idea though. As you say, 4+ is fine all day and has been fine at night too...

Disappointing that nothing seems to work for your DS. We're reluctant to change her in the middle of the night in case she takes it as an invitation to get up and play (we're still up at least twice if not more with DD2 so our sleep is precious at hte moment and we're already going to bed at 9pm!). Gah...

My DS had this problem, really bad, to the point where the bed would be soaking in the morning.

Maybe it was easier for me as I wouldn't go to bed until midnight at the earliest, but it really is best to try and change the nappy later on.

You wouldn't put a nappy on at 8 in the morning and leave it on until 7pm would you?!

Even if you are going to bed at 9pm, try and get up around midnight, change the nappy, and go back to bed. If you do it in the relative dark (ie; maybe with a nightlight), and don't talk, you should hopefully find that your DD won't think it is time to play.

DSM - thanks for the suggestion, we might have to consider it I guess. I will see if DP is keen to try it out (am very protective of my sleep!)

Sounds like this is something which can happen at this age maybe? It's not like she is drinking more than she used to (if anything probably less as she was having milk in the night still until very recently).

My DD does this and leaks and it wakes her up.

She is 2.8 yrs old and what I do is go to boots and buy the packs of disposable nappy inserts for cloth nappies. I pop one of those in her nappies when she's ready for bed and normally she won't leak at all.....

Saves a lot of bedding changing

try using a nappy wrap over your nappy!!

Joe1977 · 27/03/2009 21:57

We had this with DS1, and found the Nature branded nappies good.

I do have a couple if you want to borrow FFP and post back??

This is happening to us as well, DS is 2.5 and recently he has been absolutely soaking. It really bothers him. We've tried various things too...you are not alone!
