Dry at bedtime - when should I start to worry. DS now 4.1yrs

DS was dry in day at 2yrs - no problems at all but still nowhere near dry at night.

I put him in the Huggies PJ Pants which are aged 4-7 years. He doesnt have a lot to drink at night, had really good bladder control during day but pull ups soaking in morning.

When he wakes in morning we takes them off and goes straight to toilet.

All his friends are out if them at night. Any advice please?

DS is almost 5 and wees almost as soon as he falls asleep. No big drinks, a wee before bed etc etc.

I think its fine, will sort itself out - same as day training did.

BananaFruitBat · 23/03/2009 21:49

DS (4.11) won't even wear the Huggies. I have to change his bed every single bloody* day!!

I've told him he can't go for sleepovers until he's dry at night, but (nicely - I hope)explained to him why.

DS1 is 4.3 ans still wears a nappy at night, which is usually wet in the morning.
Think it is pretty normal esp for boys.

seeker · 23/03/2009 21:50

My ds was well over 5 - can't remember exactly when. No need to worry until 7, I think the current expert advice says.

Don't restrict drinks - they can't be dry at niht til their brains are ready for it - and not enough to drink can make the pee more concentrated, irritate the bladder and make things worse.

Relax - take out shares in Huggies and wait for nature to take its course!

We accept referrals in our enuresis (bedwetting) clinic from the age of 7. That is when most children would be dry at night and may need some help and advice if they aren't.

Statistically there would be about 3-4 children in a reception class that are still wet at night so he isn't the only one!

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 21:52

DS1 (8.5) stil wet at night..........actually that reminds me must ring the enuresis clinic tomorrow to chase up his prescription.......

Banana - I've been changing bedding daily for about 4 1/2yrs now.

notnowbernard · 23/03/2009 21:55

dd is 5.4 and in a pull-up at night

does a big wee before bed and as soon as she wakes up

pull-up is wet (though not sodden, as it was 6 months or so ago) 5 out of 7 nights, I'd say

she is still happy to wear a pull-up (thank God)

mullercorner · 23/03/2009 21:56

Gosh I hadnt realised. So can relax, not a problem and will as you say let nature take its course.

All boys so far Ive noticed. Thanks for advice

DS1(9.5) finally became night-dry at 8 years old. Went to enuresis clinic but didn't find the advice made much difference and didn't want to give him medicine unless it was really bothering him. He's such a heavy sleeper he still can't wake at night to go to the toilet but obviously can just hold it in all night now. He's thrilled that he never wets now, even if he has a hot chocolate drink last thing (previously banned).

DS2 (5) still in pullups and wets every night and we're not bothered. Actually we maybe had a chance to get him dry: when he was 2.5 he went for about 3 weeks not wetting at night but we kept him in night nappies because the thought of him being dry at night was very upsetting for DS1 and he went back to wetting again. He isn't such a heavy sleeper and can wake at night, in fact after he wets he gets up to take off the pullup, so I think that when he wants to be dry it may not be too hard, unlike poor DS1.

I really wouldn't worry, at DS1's 7th birthday sleepover 2 of the 7 friends invited came with dry-nites in their overnight bag!

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 23:51

they're all so different though - you've got my DS1 who mentioned in my previous thread - doesn't wake up when he wets the bed just sleeps straight through.

Then there's DS2 who threw a tantrum in town on the way to boots when he was 3 1/2yrs old because he asked what we were going to buy and I told him "your nappies".

He threw a totaly hissy fit and declared he didn't want to wear nappies anymore...........so I rang DH and told him and we agreed that I'd go to argos and buy mattress/pillow/duvet protectors instead.

He's 5.4yrs old now and I can count on my hands how many accidents he's had since that day - and the majority of those he's done a tiny dribble and woken up hysterical and then done the bulk of it in the toilet - only 2 "proper" wetting instances that I can think of

gigglewitch · 24/03/2009 00:15

definitely they are all different. It doesn't work on 'brain-power' either, ds2 is still unreliable, sometimes wears night time dry-nites, he is 5.6yo. So bright that he works with the year above him, but can't suss out how to remember to wake up for a wee.

Wouldn't worry yet - they make the pants for 4-7yo's so it is a very common thing

Xavielli · 24/03/2009 07:45

DS has been dry at night since 3.2. He wouldn't pooh in the toilet and was saving it all up for as soon as I put his pull up on at night. So I stopped putting the nappy on and everything fell into place.

DD is 2.11 and refuses point-blank to wear a nappy to bed. She still wets maybe 3 out of 7 nights.
I use Boots bed mats with a cot sheet over the top and it saves the need to change the whole bed everyday. (bottom sheet and pillow usually ok)

Portofino · 24/03/2009 08:27

My dd was in pull ups at night til nearly 4 and they were always wet. I ran out one day so told her she didn't need one any more. She has had very few accidents since. Is it worth trying going without the pull up?

hornsea · 24/03/2009 11:14

Dont worry our DS has just become dry at 6.5 years. He will do it when ready. DD nearly dry at 4. Still take DS to toilet at 10.30, he never ever remembers.

PinkBubblesGoApe · 24/03/2009 11:29

DD is finally dry (with the odd incident) at 4.8, she asked to stop wearing pullups at 4 but I was constantly changing sheets. Then almost from one day to the other she stopped.

At first I would take her sleeping to the toilet before I went to bed, but her paed. told us it was better to let her wet the bed at first but develop her own control rather then get her body used to being taken in the night. It gave us a lot of trouble but seems to have worked.

stealthsquiggle · 24/03/2009 11:35

Agree with FAQ - it depends what sort of sleeper they are, IYSWIM. DS is a very heavy sleeper and was nearly 5 before he was out of pull-ups at night, because he didn't (still doesn't) wake up, so it had to wait until he could physically last the night. I somehow suspect DD (2.5) will be different as she is a very light sleeper.
