For a newborn I love a stretchy wrap such as the moby, calin bleu fleece, kari me, hugabub etc. Once on you can just leave it on and put the baby in or out as needed, you use the same basic tie for most positions. Not much difference between them, some are prettier, some are slightly wider...

Woven wraps can also be used from newborn but I found it difficult to pop ds in and out and he wasn't so snuggled into me. They really come into their own when you want to wear them on your back because they are suitable for heavier babies and you can get a more secure tie (with the stretchy wrap ds used to wriggle and fidget loads on my back and it would sometimes work down so he wasn't held in quite as much-he wasn't in any danger of falling out but it just wasn't as comfortable and he didn't feel as secure.

ok thanks that helps. I was looking at newborn for now so will look into the first few names. theres so many out there I feel overwhelmed.

Is there any reason I would need a wider/thinner one? I'm tall or is it just one of those things?

I have a pouch and a ring sling but find they both tend to swing when I lean forward and I don't want that with other small people to deal with.

I made my own stretchy wrap. Just went into a fabric shop and bought 5m of Jersey Cotton, chopped it lengthways into one piece 20" wide and the rest of it (which ended up about 40" wide, I tapered the ends so it was easier to tie)

I found the thinner one more lightweight, easier to tie, better to take along with me as it took up less room. The wider one I folded in half before putting it on and that made a sort of pocket on the front which was useful for bus tickets and a muslin. I also found it more supportive as it was effectively thicker (this only mattered past about 3 months)

To make it feel secure, when the baby is tiny newborn, tie it firmly (not so tight you can't breathe!) but without leaving a space for the baby and use the stretch in the material to put the baby in. As he grows you'll get into the habit of how tightly to tie it.

I don't trust my hemming skills though I did think about it. Guess what I've been googling this afternoon

You don't need to hem jersey cotton - it doesn't fray.

Is it not too stretchy. I assume not if you've used it. I can't get to any shops so will have a look online. Unless you can recommend a seller.

From what I've read you made two slings froma length? One narrow and one wide with tapered ends?
I'll have a look because I know there are sites with instructions I'm just a wuss. I got my mum to make a coorie style pouch with me just for reassurance.

No it's absolutely fine - it's like t shirt material. Am still using it now and DS is 5.5 months (although a fairly small baby). My friend has got a kari-me and that seems stretchier to me. I did have a bit of a stretch of all the different material in the shop and got one I felt was thick enough and I went for 100% cotton as well to be sure.

Yes, I made 2 slings. Originally intended to make 3 but decided to try folding the 2/3 bit and see how it worked. I had to taper the ends as it would have been too bulky to tie otherwise.

Oh and when it comes to tying them go on YouTube. There are loads of films. Far easier than trying to work out instructions

Just thought I would let you know I've arranged to buy a moby wrap for a decent price today.
I might still look at making one but thought it might be easier with everything thats going on to get one thats done already. I'm sur eI'll get hooked

just wanted to thank you all again.
I love the wrap. I wear it to take the children to school/playgoup and also around the house to get jobs done. He loves it. Hes a very contented baby as long as hes held so its perfect
