those that know about wool - where am I going wrong?

I have been trying a wool wrap on DD at night but although the wrap itself doesn't feel too wet, her sleeping bag is very slightly damp in the morning and after airing smells of wee (not what I was aiming for!)

I treated the wrap with lanolin 3 nights in a row before using for the first time and dressed DD in sleeping bag with just a pyjama top. Can anyone suggest where I am going wrong? Does the wrap need washing and treating again? Or is this just how wool works?

I don't know nappy obsessed - I am interested in the answer too as I have 2 wool wraps, lansinoh and a pair of longies on their way to me.

Is it the wrap or the bag that smells (or both)? Is it a second hand wrap?

I LOVED my wool wraps for the first few months but then went off them because of lingering wee smells even after airing and stinky bedding. Even after washing and re-lanolising

I was then going to try selling them on so stripped them right down (work washing up liquid right into it and rinse lots)to get rid of all the lanolin traces (I did this a few times and also chucked them in the machine with other woolens a few times). But then I had a wrap shortage so had to bring them back into use and they are great again!

I think maybe that after a couple of months they need a really deep clean to get them properly clean again, the wee smell seems to build up with just a gentle wash every month.

For the dampness issue, it's probably more that your dd lies quite still so pressure causes it to wick a bit but an extra booster will help with that, I just use microfibre cloths folded because they don't really add any bulk.

I used wool with both my boys and was going to write a long post but Claireybee has said it all for me.
Specially about the childs weight basically squashing the wee through.
The wool wraps are just breathable and moisture resistant, not waterproof. You need to make sure the nappy is absorbent enough. I would suggest boosting the nappy a bit more in case its too wet and the only place for the wee to go is wicking through the wrap onto the bedding etc.

(oh just noticed claireybee said that too!)

thanks for the responses

the wrap is new so can't need stripping, maybe the problem is just that DD lies too still and we are getting lots of wicking

will try to boost the nappy a bit more and see if that does the trick. If not I guess wool is not for us...

I used to bung a terry square between baby and bag which helped, but it does get a bit steamy in there, yep.
