I am being completely PFN (Precious First Nappy) about this, but have questions

Ok, so loving my bum genius, but have some questions:

  1. They advertise that you can roll them up to put in your wet bag if out. But do you have to be ultra careful that any poo is not allowed to go on the outer cover, or is it ok? I wouldn't want my nice coloured BG to become brown streaked.
  1. I washed the nappies at 60 as per instructions, and they came out beautiful. I then put a couple in with a normal 40 wash, and the covers are ok, but the liners are dingy already Was I wrong to put in with other washing, or was it the temperature? I know it is no big deal, but I just wouldn't want to make them look old before their time.
  1. DD tends to have squidgy or loose poos, very rarely 'formed'. She is 19 mo. Would you use a liner on top of the pocket? I know some people say just chuck it in, but there is a lot of poo to do that. Equally, I won't have time to keep running upstairs everytime DD does a poo (she can do 2 or 3 a day) and sluice out a nappy, because I will have DD1 (SN), DD2 & newborn DC3. Would you suggest disposable liners or fleece?
  1. Some of you say that you wash every other day, does that still apply if you have pooey ones, or do you need to do those same day to avoid stains?
  1. I saw an old post from someone saying they had been told that their BG had deteriorated because they washed at 60, but the instructions on my BG 3.0s say to wash at 60 and tumble dry warm. Which is correct? I don't want to ruin them because they cost so much.

Thank you so much in advance!

1.I rolled up with no probs
2.I found the inserts greyed instantly regardless of temperature, i always wash nappies @ 60 altogether but still they greyed!
3.I prefer fleece liners to keep lo's bum dry.
4.I wash every day usually but haven't had any major staining issues if washed every 2nd day, a bit of sun soon gets rid of stains anyway
5.I washed @60 and tumbled with no probs

DON'T tumble the outers

PinkTulips · 16/03/2009 16:24
  1. not used BG so not sure about this one
  1. if they're fleece liners then sadly they do tend to get a bit grotty looking no matter how you wash
  1. i love disposable liners for rotten squidgy toddler poo... just dump liner down the toilet and put nappy into pile/bucket to be washed
  1. if you've used a sposie liner they'll be fine a there won't be more than the odd bit on the nappy. i do find as a general rule though, anything more than a half load in the machine (and on full load settings) and they don't seem to get as clean as i'd like
  1. not sure about BG like i said but i never, ever tumble dry wraps even if you supposedly can as it wrecks them in no time, i do all nappy washes on 60 though [sound of whales dieing]

I've been using my BGs for a year (yikes!) and they are still white - do you do a cold rinse first? That really helps. 60 wash with fairy non bio, line dry if pos. Sometimes there is the odd stain - but they seem to come out after another wash or two. Sun is def the best stain remover!
I wash every other day. DD has very soft poos, I find they actually 'roll off' better if I do all the 'scraping' in one go and the poo has had time to solidify / dry out a bit, I just kind of wipe it off with loo paper (and gloves on). I can't really see the point of fleece liners and paper ones seem to defeat the point of the stay dry effect of fleece, so I don't bother with liners.

I'm currently using paper liners with fleece pockets because I'm using cream at night and don't want to get any on the fleece, the nappy stays on for 12+ hours and I find her bum is still as dry with a liner as it is without, I was quite surprised tbh.

I've just invested in a load of BG as well - so reading replies with interest! I'm not sure what to do with pooey nappies either (ds is 5 weeks and has runny breast milk poos) - am I supposed to scrape it off? never heard that before - or rinse it in the toilet?

sorry bit of a post hijack just thought it made sense to add to the BG questions already on here

noolia · 17/03/2009 17:17

With runny bf poo no need to scrap - just cold rinse in the machine first!

soon2befamilyof4 · 17/03/2009 18:04

Yes I always shoved BF poo straight in the washing machine (that wasn't with BG and was a year ago) and plan to do the same thing when this one is born (will be BG and others).

I wouldn't worry too much about stains. I haven't had a stain that won't come out with some sun, even when dealing with really nasty poo. I usually buy second hand nappies and if they come with stains I just hang up in the sun. If they are reallly bad, I leave them out there for a few days on the line and then put back in the wash if needed. Stains come right out!

Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful. Lollipop, which liners do you use?

I had stains on my BG inserts until I started washing them in a mixture of napisan and lidl non-bio (doesn't seem to make a big diff if at 40 or 60 so I do 40). They're now practically spotless despite DS's luminous BF poos.
I wash every day and have never bothered attempting to scrape; I figure now the sun's out I'll be hanging them out to dry so will bleach out the very last of the stains.
I've always rolled them up and the poo has always washed straight off the covers, whetehr or not I remember to do a cold rinse first.
