ds1 is 3 in june. he is in pull ups. never tells me if they are full and leaking, even when clothes are soaked. never tells me when he's done a poo. if you take pants off him he will weein a potty and can wee on demand! should i do in easter whenhes off preschool for 2weeks or do it when he's 3? I think he is just lazy. what to dofor the better?

I would do it at Easter, then if it's still a disaster you've got enough time to be relaxed and try again in the summer.

If you do it in the summer you may feel it's now or never and get more stressed.

That's just my personal feeling though.

As an aside, if you let him wander around without pants & trousers does he wee in the potty? Some children find it hard to remember they are not in nappies when they are all bundled up in clothes.

he doesnt tend to leave the potty if hes naked, he carrys it around with him? bit nurotic?ive never told him off for weeing on the floor

Well you have started potty training already if he is doing pees in a potty if he has no nappy on.

Have you tried him in pants yet, and if so what is his reaction ? DS was very adamant about not wearing pants and I had one unsuccessful attempt involving 4 changes of trousers and pants, before we both lost interest and went back to nappies.

Give it a go if you want in the school holidays, but if he isn't upset about doing a wee in his nappy and doesn't flag up that when its full then it sounds like he isn't ready yet and maybe just keep going with the nappy off when home for a bit longer.

I'm from the lazy school of potty training btw. I'm sure someone will come along soon and tell you how you will have success in a couple of weeks using smarties and stickers, but it all seems like hard work to me.

rookiemater, if someone was successful in a couple of weeks with smarties, I'd say that's good going. There's obviously a fair bit of natural variation in how long it takes children to get it, whatever age they are.

LiberalIdleOlogy · 18/03/2009 10:11

I opened this because I thought there was an organisation called 'ipotty' that you could send your children along to during the holidays, and have them come back potty trained. How fantastic (though perhaps emotionally scarring) would that be!

Our Ds similar age.
We're gonna try in first week of Easter, but if disastrous start again at start of summer hols.
In my heart I don't think he'll be quite ready but it's all good practise. Hope it goes well for you. (get your cleaning gloves on and stock up on patience...)

its hard to know what to do as i know he is being very lazy. when im cleaning his bum i cant help thinking eurgh i shouldnt be changing your nappy. maybe causei have a baby now?

Think I'll be helping with bum wiping for a little while though.
He's still little and don't think our ds is lazy at all. He's just more interested on other stuff.
Good luck with 2 bums to deal with.

mad4 - it depends how much washing you want to do at easter. it sounds to me like he is not ready and it will just be really stressful for both of you. The summer is a great time to potty train though as you can send your ds out into the garden and if he wees out there who cares (although dd2 did a poo on our lawn when attempting this technique - not so great!

Have you asked him if he would like to come out of nappies and wear big boys pants? If he is keen it is prbably worth a try - take him shpping to buy some fab pants (lots of!) and take a chill pill .

I was incredibly lazy potty training my 2 dds - the nursery told me to potty train dd1 as she was ready .

Good luck

we've discussed a special present, bought pants and he gets excited but when it comes to it doesnt want to. may see how he is in few weeks....
