Would you commence potty training under these circumstances?

Ds is 2.7. He isn't aware of peeing but that may be due to the disposables. He knows when he is pooing though.
I am thinking of going down the cold turkey route starting tomorrow. However, we need to go shopping tomorrow, he has his first trip to the dentist on Wednesday and is meant to be going on a day out on Tuesday. Should I just go for it anyway? What about accidents on public transport?

i'd leave it until you can spend a day at home or at someone else's house who doesn't wee on their carpet. the first couple of days i put ds on the potty about every 20-30mins and we still had accidents.

Habbibu · 15/03/2009 19:22

You don't have to do the cold turkey route - I don't buy the confusion issue, tbh. We put dd in pull-ups when out - told her they were a differnt kind of big girl pants, and then I just forgot one day. Didn't seem to set her back at all.

i think it is better and less stressful if you can at least spend the first few days at home - he is bound to have accidents so easier to be on home turf

Yes, that's what I was thinking choufleur.
Might postpone it until Thursday.

i'd wait til next weekend tbh with all that going on.

am wondering whether to PT my ds1 who's the same age too but procrastinating for a variety of reasons.

one thing people keep telling me is if they're not ready it won't go well so be as sure as you can be he's able for it before you go ahead.

we waited unitl we had a clearish week, with only local things ( and i did chicken out and put him in pull ups when we went to a birthday party on day 3ish) but aslong as you have a travel potty you should be okay. Just make sure you have lots of spare clothing! Good luck

nickytwotimes · 15/03/2009 19:25

Ooh, confusion!

Tbh, I am quite set on the cold turkey. Might shove pull ups over the pants later on, but I think a few days at home might help us both!

you can still go out but don't go far. or invite friends round so that you don't go completely stir crazy.

nickytwotimes · 15/03/2009 19:26

Chrikey, hadn't even considered a travel potty.

Yes, will wait till Thursday. We have aquiet ew days then.

Fair enough - I knew both dd and I would have gone mad with 2 days of using the potty every half an hour. It just didn't seem worth the stress, and she's hardly ever had an accident.

nickytwotimes · 15/03/2009 19:29

Habbibu - I am set on the idea just now - mmight be a different story once we get started!
One of my pals managed the pull ups route. I think my ds is too lazy though, which is rich coming from me, lol.

Oh, absolutely - sorry - wasn't trying to persuade you! Just know that my own patience levels were way too poor to even contemplate it. Good luck!

nickytwotimes · 15/03/2009 19:39

Oh, God Hab, I was worried you'd think I was being dismissive!

Perhaps we should go on a stop-worrying-about-others-so-much course?

Let's have a manly handshake. As long as there's no pee on them (checks hands).

nicky, I'd definitely wait, especially since it's his first trip to the dentist. Cold turkey worked fine for us, but I wouldn't have done it under those circumstances.

You don't have to be totally house-bound - DD peed in the corner shop on the second day and they didn't mind at all - but I think short trips are a lot less stressful at the beginning. There's rightly a lot of discussion about when children are ready, but it has to be the right time time for the parents as well...

What are you doing the week after that?

vesela · 16/03/2009 09:54

whoops, sorry, I hadn't seen you'd already said you were going to wait until after the dentist!

nickytwotimes · 16/03/2009 14:51

Appreciate the post anyway, thanks!
And thanks everyone.
