I can't find anything out about the council tax discount at all. I don't work at the moment and have always been confused by tax credits but how do they change when one declares thay are a student and also not working?

I got the 25% off council tax as a atudent by getting my DH to ring the local office (lazy but effective). Tax credits are confusing- if you have time to work 16 hours a week it is worth doing I think. I couldn't do it while studying for my PGCE but lots of people do it for other courses. You don't get them if not working (unless through your partener) but there is a lot of other funding available. Never enough but it all helps.

I am at uni and don't pay any council tax...I thought students were totally exempt, under all circumstances??? To get the exemption I just called the council and gave them my unicard number!

Yes, students are exempt, but if you live with another adult they still have to pay the reduced rate for one person.

Forgot to say.... when I was a student my uni provided me with a letter to give to the council which said that I was a full-time student and when my course finished.
