What nappies? soaking wet by 4am!

Any advice much appreciated!

DS, 5 months old goes to bed about 7.30, feeds about every 2 -3 hours onwards and by 4 needs changing or else he leaks everywhere!

We are co-sleeping at the mo (only way I can get any rest, and wanting a lovely snuggly night with him) but changing him, some nights all his clothes, is waking both of us up too much.

At the moment We're using pampers size 4 which is bigger than daytime nappies, anyone know of a nappy which will keep him dry through the night, or any other tips, I'm tired....

Are you changing him before you go to bed? It might stop those 4am wakings

twostrokefour · 13/03/2009 22:38

I change him at 7.30 but don't want to disturb him too much when I go to bed around 11 (and knackered!) he's really sleepy so don't want to wake him up.

Maybe I should though and get through the hard bit before I go to sleep?!

Go to bed an hour earlier and change his bum and settle him down again. Might stop the four am horror

Yeah I change nappy when I do the late feed. I usually do it half an hour or so before I go to bed. Having said that have moved my 4 month old in with other kids now as he does not seem to disturb them at all but does me with all his murmuring and muttering.

Blarbie · 13/03/2009 23:04

Is it poo or wee? If it's wee then I'm sure there's a nappy out there that's OK - I use reusables and just put 2 prefolds in the wrapper. If it is poo, then it just has to be changed. Sorry I can't remember if 5 month olds poo in the night.

Blarbie · 13/03/2009 23:05

also can't remember if I used to do the double at 5 months or if I just got up and changed. sorry, useless!

TheNatty · 13/03/2009 23:42

mothercare sell disposable inserts for their reusable nappies, which i have used in dispoables to get them to go overnight b4.
they dont work out to expensive as u only use one a night

twostrokefour · 15/03/2009 21:10

Thanks for all the tips!

I tried my cloth inserts which I had forgotten I even owned... put them inside the disposable and it did the job, just enough to get through the night!

Pampers are crap IMO, Huggies or even Tescos own are much better.

mumoftoby · 16/03/2009 11:07

If the cloth inserts stop working as he gets larger you could buy a motherease airflow wrap and put it over the top. If you needed you could put a couple of microfibre cloths (4 in a pack from poundland) between the nappy and the wrap.

For the night feed, i used to change him first or midway during the feed, then put him back in cot / bed after his feed when he was all sleepy again.
Great believer in the pambers dry nights although sometimes you have to wonder where all the wee comes from!!!
Also I changed from babygrows to 2 piece pajamas which were easier to change the bottom part when wet.
I also put sheets on both sides of his mattress so that I could just flip over the mattress if it was wet - minimised too much night time chaos.
At 5 months my DS was just starting solids so I stopped the 2nd dream feed - just gave him a cuddle or drink of water and he soon forgot all about it. I carried on with the 11pm feed a little longer. Once they are having more solids and less night time milk you should be ok. Good luck!

pedalmonster · 18/03/2009 09:50

Just re-read: you are feeding him every 2-3 hours? At 5 months... he is not actually hungry and is just looking for comfort, I'm willing to bet. Just try and give him a cuddle to settle him - he should be ok with one or max 2 feeds in the night. My DS was always starving - even now, he is eating us out of house and home - but you need to get your sleep Twostrokefour, otherwise you will not be able to function!
I was also big on co-sleeping but DH put a stop to that when DS was 4 months old and from then he was in his cot - and didnt seem to mind at all! Try to make the move while he is still little and he will take it all in stride! (unless you are wanting to co-sleep longer?)

workingmom2000 · 26/03/2009 17:16

i used asda brand and they were terrible. I now use pampers for my 5mth old - I change the nappy at 7pm and then at 7am and they have not leaked up to now.

Babieseverywhere · 26/03/2009 17:39

We have a co-sleeping baby bot who nurses a lot at night.

I see you have a temp solution of cloth inserts in your disposables but when he starts outweeing them I have a suggestion for a total cloth nappy

I found a quick flip cotton nappy with a little kiwi wrap fantastic. I sometimes line with a stay dry MEOS andwhen I do that his bottom is actually perfectly dry in the morning

Babieseverywhere · 26/03/2009 17:39

Boy not bot...LOL

qwertpoiuy · 28/03/2009 18:10

Lidl nappies are excellent for soakage, as are Tesco and Boots own. Steer away from Pampers

webby12345 · 28/03/2009 21:12

wilkinsons own nappies are great i used to change my 2yr olds nappy at 12 before i went to bed and he used to wake up soaking then i changed to wilkinsons nappies now he has dry clothes and bedsheets in a morning like qwertpoiuy said steer away from pampers

ben5 · 28/03/2009 21:15

i like pampers nappies but also try tesco's they do the same job but half the price

kittykat21 · 28/03/2009 21:23

We had problems with pampers too, they leaked all the time! We use tescos own brand and they are brilliant

MrsHD · 02/04/2009 20:49

DS is in LIDL naps at night and most mornings he's leaked, but isn't in a soaking nappy. I think it's prob my own fault for not doing them up really tight but I'll admit it's put me off buying them another time. I'd love to have him in cloth overnight but really don't want to be changing him in the night. will muse on that one.

Octothechildherder · 03/04/2009 12:45

Why would you change him at night in cloth?

DS3 wees through everything at night - all disps and cloth - it is a real experiemnt trying to find something that works. Last night he wore a bamboo nappy, double booster and lollipop cover and his pjs were dry - for the first time in ages! I have tried nearly every possible combination!
