What songs do you sing to your children?

For some strange reason I have sung 'When a knight won his spurs' an old school assembly song to each of them when they were babies whilst they were having their last bottle and cuddle before bed.

I get requests for Puff the Magic Dragon when they are tired or sad, and I have been known to do that Seekers Classic 'Morning town ride'.

My 6 year old daughter likes a burst of 'She's so love-er-ly' Scouting for Girls (I think) at breakfast.

So tell me your guilty secrets and/or inspire me.

What a lovely thread. I sing the songs my Mam sang to me. Ally bally is a favourite here too, as well as:

Christopher Robin
Scarlet Ribbons
Waters of Tyne
Bonny at Morn
The Loom

Also a slightly weird song called Rap to Bank which is about a mining accident. Not entirely sure how appropriate that is come to think of it...

DD esp fond of Hey Big Spender (with associated dance)

also Elton John's Are You Ready For Love

"You've got a lovely bottom, you've got a lovely bottom oh yes you have" (to the tune of 'I've got a golden ticket' when changing nappies')

Islands In The Stream
Happy Talka
Chim Chim Cha Ree
Electric Dreams
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
These boots are made for walking
Clementine
Daisy (when we ride our bike together)

Ah, I love singing...

It is brilliant to see that we are not the only family that thrives on singing. I sing all the time to my children (even though I am not technically that good at it )

When ours were younger, we could get away with singing/playing almost anything and favourites were

Abba
The Beatles
Ralph Mctell (Let me take you by the hand)
Tubular Bells (I was a child of the 70's!)
Matchstalk Men - this song still has me howling here
Rolf Harris (Two Little Boys)
When a Night Won his Spurs
I was born under a wondering star (Paint your wagon)
If I were a rich man (Fiddler on the roof)
Dolly Parton - 9 to 5

So many good ideas on this thread, I'm going to write myself list and stick it to the fridge. Lucky, lucky DS!!!

Ha! singalongamum, I thought that I had totally killed this thread but in actual act it was you

I urge everyone to check out the Matchstalk Men link above and to do so without blubbing

I have loved this thread, read every post and am now singing an even wider range of folksy, melancholy and just plain daft songs!

morning town ride is the standard but also this:

dreams to dream (when i'm feeling ambitious).

Yey! Great thread!

Our loving/lulling song is The Lord's My Shepherd

Stewball is probably our best all as a family.

'The Grand Ol' Duke of York' and 'Sing a song of Sixpence' are probably my favourites of the nursery rhymes, but I think DD likes 'Wind the Bobbin Up' and 'One, two, three, four, five, Once I caught a fish alive'.

'Naked Time in the City' and 'You are my baby, I am your mommy' are song made up running on no sleep.

Favourites from my mother include Little Ducky Duddle (not my baby in the video!) and 'How much is that Doggy'.

Please, please, please can someone tell me which album has this song on it:

Who's got a button nose
Ten little tiny toes
And sticking up hair
Who's got the cutest
smile in all the world
in a face that's oh so fair

We heard it somewhere and would love to have the album.

Many thanks in advance!

I sing dream a little dream, I think it's by the Mamas and Papas, to my DS before he goes to bed. It was on the Littlewoods advert around Xmas time and it stuck in my head. My DH sings 2 little boys to him if he puts him to bed.
He loves Beyonce "put a ring on it" and Lily Allen "The fear", he likes their videos on MTV , he smiles and rocks back and forth when they come on. My DH says he likes the curvier lady.

Wigglesworth · 27/03/2009 16:19

I'm really sorry but Matchstalk Men makes me howl with laughter cos it was on the end of an episode of I'm Alan Partridge when he got involved with Dan and his wife or as he affectionately called them "sex people". Gets me everytime, I love Partridge.

HA! Have just resurrected my own thread because I cannot get 'Oh Sit Down' (James) out of my head because I have sung it to dc3 every night in the bath this week

Thought getting it into yours might help!
