Was going to start potty training at Easter but DS started to take off his nappy suddenly and we were forced into it. Luckily he was ready for change and thanks to a Pocoyo reward chart and lots of chocolate he does wee when he needs to straight into the toilet too. Hurrah ! By-passing the potty. Any accidents have been on trips out and really my fault as I have to remember to take him every hour if he hasn't gone before we leave etc etc - a learning process for the both of us. Unfortunately he WILL NOT sit on the loo. He has to wee like Daddy standing up and has perfected his aim, but then comes the problem when he has a poo. We have a training seat and he did do a few wees on it before he decided to stand up, but he likes to squirrel himself away when number 2 comes. I have tried reading him a story but he gets dreadfully upset if I even start talking about sitting on the loo. I have tried giving him privacy, and a couple of times he has been standing having a wee and pushing a poo out - so I quickly sit him around and say we poo on the toilet and we'll try next time, not to worry etc etc. All I can say is that thank God we have washable floors. The house stinks like dettol. Does anyone have any hints, or do I just have to be more patient and ride it out. He has some special underwear too, and gets really upset when he doesn't make it. Yet he must know when he wants to do a poo as he pauses and leans forward in a kind of running race position for 10 seconds or so (quite humorous to see), and then I have to whisk him off to the toilet but then it's too late and he gets quite upset at times. I know he is still really young, but he has done so well at weeing, it's weird (or is it ?) that he has a mental block at pooing on the loo. Sorry so long. We have oinly been doing it for 3 weeks and so I suspect I am being impatient ?

Well, we went for six months with dd doing a poo in her pants every single day, if that helps

Some of them just seem to take a long time to get this bit. We used bribery - no sweets or treats at all until she pooed in the loo. Took a couple of weeks but worked in the end.

There are loads of threads on this, it's very common ad there are lots of tricks and helpful bits of advice. Do a search. Good luck.

My daughter was exactly the same and I posted about it at the time as good advice given by HV (she was 3 and still insisting on a nappy for pooing)- not sure how to find that thread will poked about when have time later. I think it is a fairly common 'fear' so not to worry. In a nutshell HV advised us to take very small steps towards her pooing in the toilet and not to rush her as fear can lead to withholding poo which leads to constipation and the problem escalates.

When she wanted to poo we gave her a nappy and she went off and pooed in it so save the distress of soiling her pants etc. No amount of bribing worked until we got this advice of very small steps- so in a nappy but out of the cupboard (!) , near the loo, next to the loo, on the loo but in a nappy and then finally on the loo. It took a while but once she went once, she was fine.

Good luck, he is still very young, I'm sure it will come right soon.
