changing the time your toddler poos......

So, my DD has been successfully toilet/potty trained for about a month now, and all is going swimmingly. Except she has a habit of needing a poo right about bedtime (7pmish). She has her bath, stories, milk etc. gets ready to snuggle down, and then just wriggles and grizzles for 10-20 mins before we have to get her up and put her on the potty. Sometimes she does go before she gets into bed (we are obviously asking her repeatedly), It is not every night, though it seems to be increasing and the evening is definitely her time to go (she's usually a one poo a day type?). It doesn't help that she is not the best at settling down in the evenings and will use any excuse to be up and around.
My question is then, how can you change a toddlers pooing routine?? Having only just abandoned daytime nappies, we are at a loss!

I'm not sure you can change this - surely you need to go when you need to go!

I wouldn't attempt to try and change her bodily functions. If it's that much of a problem, put her bedtime back by half an hour.

You can't. And you shouldn't want to! Would you like to change the time you poo so as to be more convenient for someone else?

thanks for the replies.
i don't want to sound like a control freak, i only want to make her more comfortable as pooing at this time is upsetting her already delicate evening routine. She struggles with bedtime (doesn't like to miss any action ) and so i just want to make it as peaceful and easy as possible for her. Needing to poo just while your trying to drop off can't be very pleasant.
Though i understand what you mean, if she's got to go at that time, she's got to go!

Is it because she feels relaxed in her room that that sets everything off perhaps? Maybe if you started the bed time routine half an hour earlier to include reading and playing together in her room....if it is that that's the trigger then hopefully she will have pooed before actually getting in to bed. Worth a try?

PaleoDad · 10/03/2009 13:30

thanks TYAGN, hadn't thought of that actually, that her relaxing is leading to her her literally 'letting go'. Will give it a go.

How soon before going to bed does she have supper, given that eating a meal tends to trigger a poo reflex? Maybe if there were to be a bigger gap between supper and bedtime (can she go to bed a bit later?) then she would feel the urge before she's in bed.

It could be that she feels it earlier but puts it off while the bedtime routine is going on because she doesn't want to interrupt it.

I also agree with TYAGN, that it could be something to do with the relaxing.

Still, my DD wriggles for at least 20 minutes before doing a poo (and will often get on the potty and off again several times) so TBH I really wouldn't mind if she were to be doing the wriggling in bed!
