hi, DS is 8 months, we've been using washable nappies since he was 2 weeks old with no problems. In the past 2-3 weeks he's developed v bad nappy rash which also seems to be very itchy, as soon as his nappy's off he tries to scratch it. The rash is all over front and back and he has a bit on his thighs too. I have tried using bepanthen, metanium and over the counter canesten antifungal cream but they dont seem to be helping. the rash was a bit better when i used disposables for a week when our machine broke down, so i'm using a disposable at night for now even though i would prefer to stick with reusables.

any ideas? is it just teething?

Have you seen a gp to check for infection?

DD had a terrible rash with each tooth but only as it broke through and then it cleared up again straight away. Lasted only a couple of days each time.

GP can prescribe canesten with hydrocortisone in (reduce swelling), if its thrush it should clear up. Poor thing, its nasty isnt it.

ds got a bad rash with reuseables and i got him a fleece wrap and used burts bees diaper cream and it was the only thing that worked. i only using water to clean him too and changed him more frequently. hope your wee man is better soon.

i'd try to stay in for as much as you can for a couple of days and leave his nappy off. Yes there will be wee everywhere but not having a nappy on will really help, and as Scorpio said see your gp.

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2009 19:14

you can't leave nappy off when they scratch
my ds2 has the same - has been over 2 months now
we have used 2 courses of hydrocortisone but it just comes back and it's dicey using it under a nappy anyway
he has eczema and i think this is the problem but it is pretty depressing isn't it? i do hope you find an answer

Could this be eczema? DS2 has severe eczema that we have finally got under control using steroid creams prescribed creams by the GP. I would recommend going to the doctor for a check up.

If it is a simple nappy rash, I find that a thin layer of metanium and absolutely loads of plain zinc oxide cream on top usually does the trick.

My ds1 had a bad spout of nappy rash when he was little.
I boiled the kettle, put it into a glass pot along with a camomile teabag, and left it in the water for a while, till it was warm enough to go on his skin. I then put a few drops of lavender oil (essential oil) in with it and wiped his bottom with that for a few days and it honestly worked an absolute treat!
If this doesn't work I would go and see your gp.

I don't have any experience really of washables, but could you perhaps change him every single time he has a wee so that its not against his skin?

Don't mean to offend by any means. Just want to help.

Have you changed your washing powder/conditioner lately?

Just a few pointers here:

  • Go see the GP or if you want an him seen asap take him to see the pharmacist. She/he can give you a diagnosis and maybe able to give you something to clear it up.
-You can buy hydrocortisone creams from the chemist. I recommend you try using 'eumovate'. -Hydrocortisone treatments can give adverse effects when used for a prolonged time (more nappy rash)so keep it to a minimum of 4-5 days and see what happens. -As other's are saying let him get some fresh air on his bum - even if its putting a disposable nappy on him, loosely to let the air in. -Inbetween hydrocortisone treatments you can use aqueous cream to soothe itching. -Do not use any soaps when bathing him.

Teething can cause nappy rash/sore bums but normally for a limited time.

-Keep his drinks very diluted or just plain water.
-Dilute fruit juices - 1oz of fruit juice to 3oz of water. His wee could be very acidic causing the nappy rash to stay.

You need to rule out eczema so that you can treat the rash properly. Eczema will need alot of moisture. btw...
-Is the skin broken and bleeding or
-Is it pussy?

SilverSixpence · 10/03/2009 23:02

thanks everyone for your points. I also suspect that its eczema because of the itching, poor thing is very ingenious in finding ways to get at it, we solve this by trapping his arm inside his vest although he still subtly scratches in the bath while pretending to play with his ducks!

not changed washing powder recently, I change his nappy every 2-3 hours but could try changing more often and see if that helps. I find that his poos seem to have a worse effect on the rash though (solids have made them a bit corrosive!) so try and change those straight away. we don't use soaps and he only drinks water, but probably not enough as i noticed his wee was quite dark when he weed all over the bed during nappy off time the other day.

thankfully his skin isnt broken or bleeding and there isnt any pus. if that was the case i'd be down to the doctor straight away! i will try the chamomile and lavender and if it doesnt work i'll get the doctor to have a look.

My little boys nappy rash was so bad he was sent up to hospital. They gave us some cream called Triple X barrier cream. it worked a miracle! only thing that helped and believe me we tried EVERYTHING!!! Ask you GP if he can order some for you ... we now get it on prescription.
