Help! I am a novice mum and would like to know what happens at your playgroup for a childs birthday. I'm in Scotland so by that I mean P&T group for 0-3 years.

My DS is very nearly one and I recently started taking him to playgroup once a week. This week they were talking about which child would be first to have a birthday and named X child, then asked when my DS was born. When I said his first birthday was soon they said he would be first. First for what? I'm not sure what to expect. Will there be a party of some sort and am I meant to do anything ie. take a cake?

What happens at yours?

I've been to 3 or 4 mums and tots groups and tbh there was only one where some of the mums brought in buns for birthdays (it was baby play for 0 to walking so 1st birthdays).

One group I went to the other children sang Happy Birthday and the birthday child had the option of wearing a birthday hat. It was quite low key though.

At the Surestart toddler group I used to go to we had a little party for each child's birthday, and the group leader brought a cake in. It was a stable group and there was always a snack time, so we just sang happy birthday and had a piece of cake.

At ours, people tend to bring in cakes on the birthday, and we sing Happy Birthday and share the cake. But it isn't compulsory AFAIK - in fact, for DS 3rd birthday I chose to go to our usual Thursday group on the Monday so as to take in a cake, because the usual Monday group was too huge and chaotic and no one else ever took birthday cakes in anyway.
