I was just about to say Ask as well - fantastic setting. We had lunch there last week and DD thought it was like Cindarella's ballroom in there.

We also had afternoon tea in Betty's, had to queue for 30mins but it was worth it.

Pizza express. We've eaten here twice and been treated very well. They put all the families in one room, so its a bit noisy and also often squishy underfoot. :0 Its a bit of a walk to the bgs though, and try to avoid the core lunchtime period though as it gets very busy.

My DS1 loves looking at the ceiling, and both boys love the pictures on the walls.

I was going to add that Bettys seems overpriced to me.

there's an Ask in the assembly rooms?

we used to have great Student balls there when I was young... oh, those were the days...

bellavita · 03/03/2009 18:06

There is a new Pizza Express now in York - very near to Browns Dept Store. There is one in the old waterworks building at Lendle, but have heard the new one is a lot nicer.

Also, not from from MonkBar, there is a little family run trattoria - we have gone many a times and they love the kids. Have to go to work now, but will post the details for you tomorrow.

Pierre Victoire is a chain of french themed bistros - we used to go to one in Southend regularly when the dses were young, and found it very family-friendly indeed. The food was great too, and it's a fixed-price menu, which does help when budgeting a family day out.

You can also try the Spurriergate centre, just down from Waterstones - very child friendly - toy area etc.

hotbot · 03/03/2009 19:01

do NOT go to cafe rouge the srvice is shockingly poor. 2 hr wait for esentially sreak and chips served with the wrong accompanyments, and also half empty. no fun with a starving toddler

fryalot · 03/03/2009 19:08

I second the Spurriergate Centre.

Also, most (if not all) of the pubs are very child-friendly and have the added advantage of serving extra specially gorgeous beer.

Check out the York Brewery website, it lists their pubs and the beer is to die for!

While we're on the subject of pubs, it's well worth visiting the Roman Bath it has a well that goes reeeeeeeeally deep (it's glassed over and perfectly safe) which is quite interesting

York also has its fair share of Mcdonalds, pizza huts and places like that.

dontdillydally · 03/03/2009 21:01

Many thanks there are some great ideas - what is the Spurriergate??? Soem kind of food hall?

The Spurriergate Centre's fab new website

fryalot · 03/03/2009 21:44

have just had a trawl through that website.

It's not as godbothering religiously minded as it looks.

Honestly.

6y DD loves going for afternoon tea at Bettys. It isn't cheap but it is lovely and very old fashioned and quaint. DD loves her scones

We also like Loch Fyne, which does good children's meals.
