The difference between boys and girls (apart from the obvious bits!)?

I'm the eldest of 3 and have 2 younger brothers, and my mum always says that although there were 3 of us and the boys are only just 12 months apart, I was by far the hardest work because I'm a girl! She reckons that girls are far more independant, single minded and determined than boys, who are more likely to be easily distracted and 'guided' into doing what you want.

Now, I have 2 girls who are 4 and almost 2, and I have to say that my mum's theory has been proved right with these two but maybe that's just my traits shining through them . On the plus side, they're wonderfully affectionate and funny and worth every ounce of hard work.

I've just found out that I'm expecting number 3 so I guess my question is this - if I have a boy, will this make the chaos of 3 young children in the house easier to manage, and if I have a girl does that mean life will be hell?!

Am interested to hear what everyone else's experiences of boys vs girls is!

I only have 2 boys, but they sound like your definition of girls iykwim, I always look longingly at the the little girls sitting crayoning quietly whilst my boys rampage throughout the place whenever we meet up with friends/go to soft play etc

In my experience, people tend to find their firstborn hardest work, so then equate that gender as being the hardest to manage.

I have two girls and one boy. I'd say they're all as hard as each other but in different ways!
I think it's definitely true that boys ''are more likely to be easily distracted and 'guided' into doing what you want.'' However, I would also say that (my boy anyway) has far more energy than the girls and NEEDS to run around or else the house is likely to be destroyed by lunchtime!
The girls are more happy to sit and play, colour etc... but my DS has a shorter attention span and basically just has to be running/ jumping/ climbing...
My DS is definitely the most affectionate of my children, but he's also the most violent! There's really no in between with him - he's either kissing and cuddling or thumping and destroying (he is only 23 months btw!!)

I'm expecting number 4 and to be honest, if I want to have an easier life for the next few years I'd prefer a girl (that said, I love my DS to bits and would never change him into a DD - and would feel exactly the same if I got another DS this time!!)

I have quite a calm little boy (coming up to 4) and get really fed up of the stereotyping of all boys as these crazy, boisterous, senseless creatures compared to all the goody two shoes girls.

It just isn't that simple is it!

Has anyone read the book called something like "slummy yummy mummy" or something similar. Sorry can't remember exact name of book.

Anyhow author says she has 3 sons and calls mothers of girls only something like 'smogs'.
Smug mothers of girls only.

That is definately me. I look at my nephews in amazement at times. I have 3 girls.

I have heard pay back time is when they are teens. Some say girls are far harder then.

I'm sure I come across as a smug mother of a goody two shoes boy sometimes when theirs are killing each other/ trashing things and mine is sitting nicely and being a bit of a girly really. It's really awkward but I do fully expect mine will be a nightmare teen and they will all get the last laugh when their ds's are all behaving

My pfb was my ds and he was a whirling 24 hour handful of love / affection and energy in one bundle.

My other two dc are girls they are a whirling bundle of calm / bossiness and arguments.

The girls scenario is calmer , less boistrous and active. However more argumentative , single minded and stubborn.
DS is always on the go but takes everything with a pinch of salt and is definately the most affectionate and loving.

Mummyfor3 · 07/03/2009 21:33

I would not know about girls - boys only famitly , however I always felt it was A Good Thing that DS1 and 2 were the same gender as their extremely different personalities would have otherwise always been blamed on them being a boy and a girl, IYKWIM.
Jings, does that sentence make any sense at all?? DS1 v active, v bright, v hysterical dramatic, not v interested in other people; DS2 v calm, v even tempered, v affectionate, v social.

I think, at the end of the day, they are simply all different children, although I cannot imagine too many girls picking up a stick/a piece of pear (not kidding happened tonight)/Lego and using it as a gun !!

mistlethrush · 07/03/2009 21:50

Mf3 - or taking a tower of lego to bed? BALD - very good name. Ds (almost 4) does need to have lots of exercise. He often can't sit still to eat his meals (although he eats a huge amount and appears to have hollow legs at times). When he's not been so physical, he can be charming and eloquant - I know that sounds peculiar for a nearly 4 yo, but he will have long, in-deapth discussions with lots of different people. He can concentrate when he wants to - and for quite long periods. He is also very determined, single minded and doesn't want to be crossed and very independant - although he is also very loving as well.

I think its probably the physicality that generally seems to be so different between the two!
