When to call it a day and go back to nappies?

We are on day 4 of potty training DS (2 1/2) He did well on the first 2 days but yesterday he had nothing but accidents.
Overall though I feel it is still early days but there are a couple of things that are bothering me:

  1. He holds in his wees and poos for ages and when I get him to sit on the potty he will just do a tiny bit of wee then stop. He stands up and claps himself but won't finish it IYSWIM - will this just come? (he often goes on to finish it when he is playing and not thinking about it.
  2. Last night he had obviously been holding a poo in and he had his night nappy on and he got really upset as it was almost as if he had forgotten how to poo. He did it eventually but he got really frustrated in the mean time.
He tells me he needs a wee (with a bit of prompting) but dosn't seem to know how to let go Should I give up or persevere a bit?

I'm in exactly the same boat (except for the poo thing...DS simply hasn't pooed for about three days )

Also, DS seems fine with wees as long as he's got a naked bottom. Any pants get weed in straight away.

We've called it a day. DS was getting really stressed about it and panicing when he needed a wee. (he hates getting dirty hands etc) so we have gone back to nappies. I think it has made him more aware of what hes doing and hopefully will potty train himself now in a few months. Good Luck SC Hope things go better for you

Thanks QF! Good luck with the training in the future

For wee a bit of motivation can help. DS sometimes will say "no wee wee" when I know he needs to and I'll throw a bit of toilet paper in the toilet and say "can you wee wee on the toilet paper?" and suddenly there's a big wee! (Cereal works, too, as does weeing on the grass outside.)

If it's stressful stop.

Potty training when you and your child are ready is not stressful.
