Two year old too big for car seat

My son, 3 in June, is incredibly tall (his father is 6'5"). He's about to grow out of his stage 2 car seat, but shopping around for stage 3 car seats they all say a minimum age of 4.

I feel I'm being thick here, as OBVIOUSLY he has to be in a car seat that he fits into - and his height and weight are both in the stage 3 categories. But I'm getting all paranoid and thinking that there is some important reason not to put him in the stage 3 seat, like - he'll be able to undo the seatbelt, or something.

Anyway, can anyone enlighten me?

I think the car seats go more on weight / height than age.

We had a similar proble with DD1. Went to John Lewis and asked their advice (also asked on here) and decided on a Jane car seat with isofix which is fab. DD1 is comfotable and safe

when you say about to grow out of it.. in what way.

they can stay in the stage 2 one until the top of their ears is level with the back of the seat.
is he really that tall????

I thought that ds1 would outgrow his when he was about 2 cos he was really tall and growing fast, but he slowed down a lot. I think they tend to gain a lot of length in the legs as they get older, and not so much in the body... so you may well find that he lasts it a lot longer than you think he will.

otherwise look for a highback booster with a harness, such as the britax evolva 1-2-3

nannyL · 02/03/2009 19:04

perhaps you could get a britax evolva 1-2-3

my charge is 3.5 and HUGE, size 11 feet, age 4-5 clothes and he is now just hovering on the 18kg mark (when weighed naked at david lloyd), but he still does just fit in his maxi cosi priori.

are you SURE your sone doesnt fit, so long as their eyes are not over the top and they arnt over 18kg and the straps do up they are fitting in correctly.

anyway a 5 point harness is much safer, so perhaps an evolva 1-2-3 can keep him in a harness for a bit more

incidently the evolva 1-2-3 is the only 3 stage car seat that which? have ever approved as safe-ish

what weight is he? and are his ears to the top of his current car seat yet?

saralou · 02/03/2009 19:06

my dh is also 6'5" and my boys are huge

they use this one

ds2 is just over 2 can't get out, but i think you have to look at the belt on the actual car seat

saralou · 02/03/2009 19:06

my link is a britax evolver 1-2-3

You need to get a combination seat - that has a 5 point harness like the one he is currently in, but has a much bigger shell (the size of the next stage up). Britax evolva 123 I think?

I have the same problem. My 2yo DS is the height of a 5yo and is often mistaken for one. I have never met a child of the same age who is bigger than him. The Britax seat doesn't fit my car so I have a 2yo in a seat designed for a child of 4+. He doesn't undo the belt because I am strict about it. However, the problem is that they don't have a harness coming up from between their legs anymore - the adult seatbelt just goes across them and they could slip out underneath it. I always make sure my DS sits in a proper position. I am 6ft and my DH is 6ft8 so we do have a major problem with DS! My DS is now 2.11 and has been in this seat for at least 6 months unfortunately.

Hi,
I had a similar problem with my DS just b4 his 3rd birthday - took him into many places and asked around and ended up with a stage 3 seat. He was v good at leaving the belt alone and I made sure he sat up properly.
He has safely turned 5 this year.
The only down side was on longer trips when he fell asleep, an ordinary seat belt doesn't offer as much control/support as a 5 point harness.

Thanks for all the advice. My son really is that tall, his eyes are at the top of the seat, and he's 17kg.

So, it looks like a stage 3 is what I need.

Crokky, I'm willing to bet that my son is taller than yours!
