question about gro bags

so babies are meant to sleep foot to foot in cots - what about if you use gro bags? does that not apply? cause they're pretty long, if it does apply what do you do? scrunch them up or fold them at the ends?

Neither - the armholes hold them where they should be. You can fold them if you like but it doesn't really make much difference. The whole point about foot to foot is about blankets - not allowing the baby to slip down under the blankets and get overheated.

wuglet · 01/03/2009 21:21

Doesn't apply - supposed to be foot to foot to stop them slipping down under the covers.

If only in grobag (ie no blanket on top) then nothing to slip under.

that's what I though - thanks

My HV said to tuck the long bit under the end of the matress. Is it so long that it could flip up and cover DC's face? HV told us off for not putting DD at the bottom of her moses basket even in a grobag as the bottom could 'flip up'. The bag would have just about reached her knees if it had doubled up. She didn't back down though and still said it could be dangerous. How?

homicidalmatriach · 01/03/2009 21:29

Your HV sounds like an arse Marthasmama.

Yes, attacking grobags - happens very often, well known fact

hairygodmother · 01/03/2009 21:32

Have never heard about grobags 'flipping up' like that! Dd2 at 11 months is going strong in her sister's grobags, I love them as she moves around so much in her sleep (often ending up facing the other way completely) that ordinary covers would be off in no time. She's in a 6-18 month one which is v long as she's so wee, never occurred to me for a minute it might cover her face, am I a bad mother?! Have never had an HV ask me about sleeping arrangements ... But to answer the OP, as the others have, think the whole point of grobags is that feet to foot doesn't apply.

Marthasmama · 01/03/2009 21:33

Indeed she was! It was lucky DD was my second or I would have given up and checked into the home for teminally useless mothers!

homicidalmatriach · 01/03/2009 21:34

Incidentally, am I the only mum whose child escaped the grobag at a year and had to be put under a duvet simply because otherwise it was found abandoned under the cot in the morning having been removed and flung away during the night?

hairygodmother · 01/03/2009 21:35

LOL at attacking grobags

Twinklemegan · 01/03/2009 21:38

That HV was obviously bored with all the tried and tested methods of frightening first-time mums.

hairygodmother · 01/03/2009 21:38

homicidalmatriarch, my sister had same problem with her ds, he was a complete Houdini and even got out of those grobags that have those supposedly tamper-free zips. I seem to remember her sewing him into them in desperation

Yurtgirl · 01/03/2009 21:39

Surely feet to foot is rather irrelavant in a moses basket anyway isnt it

Was with my long babies anyway - didnt make a great deal of difference

Marthasmama · 01/03/2009 21:43

DS used to sort of explode the poppers at the top of his grobag when he was 6 months and then wiggle out. He thought it was hilarious. He got very angry with the 6-18 ones which don't have the poppers at the top. He also used to tuck his arms in then wiggle round so his arms were not near the holes, then scream the house down because he was stuck.

homicidalmatriach · 01/03/2009 21:48

I discovered DD had managed to get her arms and her head inside the 6-18 month one and she'd turned round so she was cocooned in it. She was very cross I'm afraid it took two giggling parents to extract her.

a bit OT but was in ikea the other day and they have really nice 2.5 tog grobags for a tenner, and 6 quid for 1.5 tog. am so mad i bought one from mothercare for £25, esp as we ended up not using it much!

SalBySea · 03/03/2009 18:25

grobags are £9 in TK maxx and primark do their own versions for £6
