To what extent can you expect a 5 year old to look after her things?

dd2 is constantly losing or breaking things.

Dh thinks you can't really blame her for it due to her age. I see the difference to dd1, who has always been very good with her stuff, dh thinks that's the exception, not dd2.

But even if it is the exception, shouldn't there be some repercussions for dd2 anyway so that she will learn?

How would you deal with it?

My 4yo is ok with not breaking or losing much, my 7yo has always been good. 8yo dd1 is appalling. Really very bad indeed. So it's not an age thing in our family.

What can you do? dd1 loses her belongings constantly and some don't get replaced, that's the repurcussion. I hope she'll get better as she gets older.

Today dd2 lost a cd that belonged to the whole family and which has some sentimental value. So I am very cross, but I think she is only mildly bothered.

It does annoy me too, especially when she loses something that's only just been bought, but my dd1 is so chaotic and dreamy that getting angry doesn't really help. She does mind losing some things, she left her whole Sylvanian families collection on the tube last summer, in a bag. She did miss them, though I replaced some for Christmas, she's still missing some of them.

But she had been helping her little sister carry her bag at the time. Typical dd1, helping little sister instead of the more vital looking after her own stuff.
