What advice can I give to my lovely, but incredibly prudish sister re. potty training her ds?

My sister's ds is 2.6, and so she is talking about starting him on the potty. My bil is a bit 'churchy' and really old fashioned, they've been together for ages- and now she is too.

They consider all things body-related as 'rude' and toilet related stuff 'dirty'. They both close and lock the bathroom door when they are showering or using the toilet (my sis takes the baby monitor in with her when she's on her own with dn.) She wouldn't even let dn go in the paddling pool with my ds in the summer, because she she didn't have a swimming nappy with her and didn't want us to see his 'thing'.

Dn has no siblings. As a result, as far as dn knows, everyone wears a nappy, or doesn't poo/wee. How do you go about potty training under these circumstances? They aren't going to change their values- so any thoughts on how they can work with them?

Oooh- I should add- she has actually asked for advice, I'm not just being an interfering cow.

Could she ask some of her fellow church goers? Would they have had the same experience?

sorry, not got any help, but does this mean that she has managed for 2.6 years to NOT have someone watch her go to the toilet!!! I didnt think that was possible! and

llareggub- mmm, already thought of that- I get the impression they don't really have discussions like that...

rtp- I know! I can't believe it myself- I don't remember the last time I had a poo in peace.

I guess every church is different but at my church there is a family liaison worker, who I'd definitely approach in your sister's circumstances. An official contact, if you like, rather than picking a church member at random.

God help the poor child.
