Help!! Is my ds 16wks unusual -size 3 nappies leak overnight??

My ds is just over 16wks and weighs 14.5lbs so fits pampers size 3 nappies really well during the day. After his bath and feed at night he has a clean nappy on and is asleep by 7/7.15 . He wakes for a feed about 11 and again at 4. By 4am he is already leaking as the nappy is full of wee!! I had 2 girls before and this didn't happen (also by 11wks they both slept 7-7, perhaps that's why??) is he an abnormal big wetter or are boys naturally bigger wetters?? Help pls I've just bought size 4 but the size is so much more than his weight. Are huggies better than pampers, or no different? You never know if he's not so wet he may drop a feed Any feedback would be appreciated. thanks

Are you using night time nappies? sorry if silly question but i wasn't using them at first and had to change ds's nappy a couple of times a night. i use huggies super dry and they keep ds comfy till morning. unless he's done one of his huge 3am poos that is...!

katieskids · 27/02/2009 13:13

I was using pampers baby dry - 12 hours wetness protection!!!

Some mornings DSs nappy is really bulging - I do a middle of the might change now when he stirs for a feed.

Tried middle of the night changing. It doesn't matter how quick or boring I make it he wakes and is chatting away and grizzling for the next hour and I worry I've disturbed his sleep pattern even more. I've not done anything different from the 2 girls yet he's not keen on giving up any of the feeds yet. Was far too smug obviously with dd's it wasn't anything I'd done to get the sleep throughs I was just lucky or ds is a greedy boy!

both my sons wet through their nappies at night. When they were tiny it was better with disposables, as they got bigger we found reusables performed better (from about 4 months onwards).

You might find it's to do with his sleeping position partly, I find it's much worse when they sleep on their sides or fronts. How does your LO sleep?

I've never had girls but some babies are naturally heavier wetters than others, also I guess it might be to do with where the pee comes from if you know what I mean - ie girls always pee pretty much centrally I am guessing, whereas if boys wriggle around their willies can get pushed towards the edge of the nappy where there is not so much gel to absorb the pee iyswim?

bubblagirl · 27/02/2009 14:44

i have always had to use one size bigger for a night time with my ds so if in 3 of a day use a 4 at night

bubblagirl · 27/02/2009 14:45

i also found huggies or tesco's sainsburys own held better at night

pampers always leaked at night even if bigger size was used

katieskids · 27/02/2009 17:11

youngvisitor and bubblagirl you've both helped thanks. Yes he sleeps on his tummy (so did dds) and of course his pee is more at the front than central so perhaps that's a reason why he leaks at the waistband. I've just bought some huggies in size 4 which I will use night time only. Reusables scares me - so much washing would I keep up? I admire all you mums who are so organised.

if the huggies dont work then try a own brand they really do work and also make sure round the leg that the bands are untucked and pulled right up so no bagginess i found if i didnt unfold the nappy properly round the leg area they would leak no matter what

even with bigger size i did find i had to change once in night sometimes still i got good at quick nappy changes without waking him if i went to bed and it felt bulbous id quickly change it so i knew it'll last for the morning

my ds was a guzzler at that age so would pee and pee lol

mumoftoby · 27/02/2009 19:38

If the leaking is just at the waist I always found huggies a little better in that area than pampers, although bf poo would slip out of the leg in huggies ( sorry if anyone is eating their dinner reading this)!

I have recently changed to reusables and can't believe how they never leak, but it is an extra wash every couple of days.

noonki · 27/02/2009 19:48

I use reusables and find them good at night but when I'm not I often use a eco baby with a pull up over the top (you can get pull ups for size four I think). Holds them all in place and stops the leaks (I reuse the pull up again and again as it never gets wet just acts as a holder iyswim !

mumoftoby · 27/02/2009 19:53

That's a good idea noonki. Or you could buy a Motherease airflow wrap to put over the disposable. You can get s, m or l in white for £5.50 in waitrose and they are really good for containing leaks.

katieskids · 27/02/2009 21:06

I will look out for the wrap next time
i'm in Waitrose. I like the idea of using it to stop leaks and it will last for a long time. Better than having 2 packs of nappies on the go. You've all been fab.
