At what age did you start reading a bedtime story to your dcs?

Our dd is 4 months and still seems very young for a story but other mums I know with dcs of similar age are reading to them already. What is a good age to start adding this in to the bedtime routine?

I think the sound of your voice and the rustle of pages is good from birth. A brightly coloured book with lovely illustrations will be fun for your dd to look at and only needs to be a couple of words or one sentence on each page.

I can't really remember, but I know we started looking at books very early and it just sort of progressed from there.

Even if you don't think they're going to understand much it's still a lovely cuddle with Mummy or Daddy before bed, and just looking at a picture book stimulates their brains and their verbal development etc.

DS is nearly three now and LOVES his books more than anything else on earth.

DS was 3months old,
he didn't really listen easily at first but it wasn't long before he sat really nicely on my lap and took delight in the stories particularly anything with lovely illustrations (esp monsters and animals) and rhyming stories (esp Dr Suess),

he now loves choosing books for me to read before bed (is 2 now)

I think we started looking at a few books before bed from about 6 months but its only really been since dd has been 15 months + that she really seems to enjoy them (and chose which ones she wants etc.). She's now 21 months and I swear she'd have us sit there and read stories all night if she had her way

Dh used to make up stories for mybump when carried de we have never stopped reading to her helped us allget in the habit tbh

Meglet · 25/02/2009 19:41

we started at 6 weeks [pushy parent emoticon].

As soon as you can be bothered!
We have always enjoyed books with ds, but by bedtime he was so knackered that after milk, he conked out. He now gets a bedtime story at the age of 2.6. Actually he gets about 3! We had a Julia Donaldson fest tonight.

16 weeks gestation [even pushier parent emoticon]

In my defence, our DD was stillborn so when I got pregnant with DS, we were determined to get some parenting time in, even if the worst happened again (no reason for it to). We took books on holiday for the bump and everything.

Aww, mrsgboring, that is so sad and so sweet.

megcleary · 25/02/2009 19:58

Bloody hell I can't post from the i pod that last one was crap!

Um, I think we probably started it as a proper routine for our DS at about 18 mths-ish? Before that we'd look at books together, but he didn't want to sit and listen to a whole story. He's 4 now and won't go to sleep without one!

DD is 3 mths old and still very foetal. She likes sleeping and cuddling up and feeding and that's about it.

Dd3 aged 8 months loves her 'stories' and peers keenly at them whenever she's on my lap next to the bookshelf. We have started with our dc's as soon as they can sit on a lap and look at a picture - from 3 months maybe?

Dd3 really enjoys 'lift the flap' animal stories eg.Dear Zoo, Peekaboo Farm - lots of animal noises etc. One series we don't particularly like are the 'That's not my...' books - they look baby friendly and cute but they don't grab dd3 as much as her other books. I'm sure others will disagree though.

DS has always liked books, but didn't start regular bedtime story until about 1 yr old (before that he would just crash out on the boob). He is now 2.5 and loves his bedtime stories, picks out his favorites and has to be rationed.

DD is only 2 months old, but is usually in my arms when I read to DS during the day and so is getting some exposure too!

about 3 months, I remember DS1 loved them at 4 months (sorry DS2 your early months are now but a blur )
