Truth About BumGenius - Calling All Mums Who Use Them

tigerbump · 25/02/2009 18:59

I must have spent DAYS researching negatives on the bumgenius nappy and reading mumsnet feedback but still have some questions.

Can anyone give me their thoughts on...

For BumGenius One-Size Reusable Nappy 3.0:

  • How many of you have experienced regular leaking?

  • Is it true you need to wash them 2 or 3 times once they are soiled/wet?

  • What laundry liquid do you use as this seems to be a big factor

  • Does the velcro go in time and on washing e.g. they are not great past 6 months of use?

  • I found reports for amonia smells (after being washed) as soon as the baby pees, any experience with this?

  • Have you found with a crawling baby the velcro scratches their skin?

  • Does anyone have any thoughts on BumGenius One-Size Reusable Nappy 3.0 V
    BumGenius All In One Nappy

  • Is the fuzzibunz actually better than the BumGenius One-Size Reusable Nappy 3.0, feedback seems to show fuzzibunz may last for the next child.

Thanks in advance...

I use bumgenius nappies on a baby and a toddler. My answers are:

*only one or two leaks in the three+ months I've been using them - no more than when using totsbots + nature babies wraps, and only when they've been on forever!

*no - where did you hear that? We've always done a rinse in the machine before putting nappies on a 60 deg wash, but that's nothing to do with having bumgenius!

*persil non-bio powder

not used for 6m yet, but only have 17 between two nappy-users so they've had a lot* of use so far an no noticeable problems with the velcro so far

*No smells

*Only velcro scratches occassionally when the nappy isn't on quite right - but this is the same as with any velcro wraps

Haven't used fuzzibunz long-term, but my small experience of using them is that the bumgenius are better.

Flamesparrow · 25/02/2009 20:30

nope
nope
surcare powder
mine is ok, but not a desperate amount of use
ammonia is only if there is too much powder used.
nope

fuzzi are just different - some suit better than others. I love both.

Maveta · 25/02/2009 20:36
  • no
  • no
  • Norit non bio baby liquid - not sure if you get this in uk, use only a dribble
  • we´ve had ours for almost a year and I would definitely expect them to do another child, the velcro can look a bit tatty but still works just the same.
  • occasional pee smell but not more than any other nappy if too much soap build up etc. An extra rinse on the next wash normally sorted it out.
  • no

I never got on that well with fuzzis - really like the look and fit on an aesthetic level but practically they were a bit - meh - and I could never get over the fact that you have to keep buying different sizes.

I used fuzzibunz with my older children - haven't liked it so much for ds2 as they leak at the moment

  • How many of you have experienced regular leaking?
None with the AIO, once with the v3 (I put it on dd wrong)

  • Is it true you need to wash them 2 or 3 times once they are soiled/wet?
No, I asked about this, a cold rinse, then a awash and extra rinse is fine

  • What laundry liquid do you use as this seems to be a big factor
I don't use liquid, I use a single bio tablet (you probably shouldn't do this...O

  • Does the velcro go in time and on washing e.g. they are not great past 6 months of use?
Only been using for a couple of months

  • I found reports for amonia smells (after being washed) as soon as the baby pees, any experience with this?
No. I think this can happen with any nappy though.

  • Have you found with a crawling baby the velcro scratches their skin?
    no

I really like them both. The aio is completely foolproof, but takes a while to dry, and is sized (so you have to replace them as the baby grows). The one-size pocket requires a minimum amount of care with assembly, dries really quickly and seems to have a slightly better fit on my dd (the aio ican leave a couple of tiny red marks on her llegs, though she is coming to the top of the size range for the aio). I think I'll keep a mixture of both.

  • Is the fuzzibunz actually better than the BumGenius One-Size Reusable Nappy 3.0, feedback seems to show fuzzibunz may last for the next child.

I haven't used fuzzies.

tigerbump · 26/02/2009 08:02

Thanks for all the feedback so far, I have a friend who is using the 3.0 and says she would never go back to disposables so all the above has really helped THANKS! xx

I worked out the AIO is more expensive as you have to buy the different sizes so am more tempted to go with the 3.0 model.

Pollyanna · 26/02/2009 08:15

tigerbump I use the 3.0 and have used various other cloth and paper nappies on my other 4 children, and think it is the best one I have tried! It is definitely foolproof - my dh even approves (although he doesn't want to wash them!)

SoupDragon · 26/02/2009 08:22

I used the V1 and they were unusable after about 8 months because the leg/back elastics went. they were a waste of money (I was told it was my fault for washing them wrongly ). Having said that, I did love them before they died.

Babieseverywhere · 26/02/2009 09:26

Also depends on your child's size as well.

With DD, I used Bumgenius OS (Version 1 or 2) Elastic has gone on 4/5 of the original 20. Got free replacement velcro tabs to sew on them by emailing UK arm of Bumgenius.

My DD used them daytime for 5 months and at night until 16 months and they fit her throughout. We moved DD to trainer pants at 5 months as we EC'd. (i.e. Offered her a potty from a young age, we do the same with DS)
I found wee nappies only need one 40c wash but poo nappies needed a couple of washes and/or a prewash. I only use Fairy non Bio Powder.

That said we only had poo in nappies until 10 months, so they did get much of a battering.

I liked them enough to buy a set of Version Three Bumgenius OS nappies for DS. What a mistake..he outgrew them at 5 months old !!! So I had to buy some MEOS and wraps for day time use and Quick Flip nappies for night, both of which have a bit of growing space for my baby boy.

Through he is on the 99.9% centile line in the red book in 1 year old clothing and was bigger than the 18 month old I met yeaterday (mind you he was a small 18 month old but still)

I would definately recommend quick flip's for night use and I really like motherease one size for day. Easy to wash/dry and mine have a stay dry inner layer so his skin stays dry.

HTH

I hope he will slim down when he getting the hang of crawling, else I have virtually new Bumgenius sat in the cupboard.

Babieseverywhere · 26/02/2009 09:28

so they did not get much of a battering

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 26/02/2009 10:50

Hello i have been using them on my ds was 2 yrs now version 2 and also some version 3 (hardy any difference)

For BumGenius One-Size Reusable Nappy 3.0:

  • How many of you have experienced regular leaking?
Never had a leak except when he had a potent bout of monster trots and even the Hoover ddam could not hold that back!

  • Is it true you need to wash them 2 or 3 times once they are soiled/wet?
Nope - i do a cold rinse (10 mins) and then a regular wash

  • What laundry liquid do you use as this seems to be a big factor
Persil non bio - about a quarter of what i would use in a normal wash

  • Does the velcro go in time and on washing e.g. they are not great past 6 months of use?
My velcor is still going strong

  • I found reports for amonia smells (after being washed) as soon as the baby pees, any experience with this?
nope - doing acold rinse before the main has illiminated this happening

  • Have you found with a crawling baby the velcro scratches their skin?
    nope

  • Does anyone have any thoughts on BumGenius One-Size Reusable Nappy 3.0 V

Hmmm i was put off stocking and using these as i find aio take longer to dry and more likely to get smelly as the insert doesnt get a good airing - also you have to get differnt sizes as baby grows though i am led to beleive they are very good on a newborn.

  • Is the fuzzibunz actually better than the BumGenius One-Size Reusable Nappy 3.0, feedback seems to show fuzzibunz may last for the next child.
I think my fuzzis look in better nick marginally as they dont have velcro for everything to stick too. The bg seem easier for nursery also.

Hope that helps

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 26/02/2009 10:52

sorry my typing is a mess

afterglow · 26/02/2009 11:06

Just to add to nappyzone's comments about the AIO, I turn them inside out to dry, so the insert gets more of an airing.

If I'd switched dd to cloth earlier it would have been a no-brainer - the v3 would have been the best choice due to its single size. As she's virtually in the largest size for AIOs though, and they're cheaper than the V3s, I'll probably keep a mixture. AIOs for the easyness and V3s for the speedy drying.

Lionstar · 26/02/2009 11:07

Didn't get on with BG, although I liked the fit of them, but they DID leak - the microfibre insert seemed to bunch up easily and the pee went stright from fleece to outer and wicked through. DD could also take the velcro off too easily.

I liked the FuzziBuns more, though still had wicking problems occasionally.

Washed everything at 40 in Ecover non-bio, using 1/3 of normal quantity and no fabric conditioner. She never pooed in nappies from about 11 months, so only had wee to cope with. If any smell built up I used a cold rinse and washed at 60.

surelyyoucantbeserious · 20/03/2009 17:37

Hi, I've also just started with bumgenius - first wash is in the machine now.

I bought them online expecting bamboo but got polyester (v3). Was after a more natural material and so slightly disappointed.

Interested to hear whether anyone has had probs with polyester i.e. do their little bums get too hot or rashy?

Also is it true you can't use nappy creams i.e. sudocrem with them?

THanks

feralgirl · 21/03/2009 10:03

How many of you have experienced regular leaking?
Pointlessly crap at night, constant leaks around waist and legs on skinny baby, but fine during the day.

  • Is it true you need to wash them 2 or 3 times once they are soiled/wet? Nope
  • What laundry liquid do you use as this seems to be a big factor Lidl non-bio; v cheap and the best I've found yet (a Which best buy no less!)and napisan at 60
  • Does the velcro go in time and on washing e.g. they are not great past 6 months of use? Mine's fine after 4 months
  • I found reports for amonia smells (after being washed) as soon as the baby pees, any experience with this? Nope, mine are as fresh as a daisy
  • Have you found with a crawling baby the velcro scratches their skin? N/A but I read the same review, the liner does fold over the velcro nicely to stop this ime

And I lag my DS in sudocrem with no daytime probs with the BGs

Ariela · 23/03/2009 10:34

Maveta, your wish is their command: there is now a One Size Fuzzi Bunz. It adjust by means of the elastic both at the legs and the waist = a good fit

Octothechildherder · 23/03/2009 20:27

I have a new one size fuzzi and it is great! No poppers on the leg snow though - just on the waist. The adjusters on the gusset seem good.
