Things your parents did that you wouldnt dream of?

Is there anything that your parents did when you were younger that you wouldnt do?

Our used to leave us in the car while they went shopping, for what seemed like hours, but in reality was probably about half an hour.

There was 4 of us and we all used to squeeze into the back of my dads car, which had three seats.

was it one of those folding ones for a drawer....or a great big full size number?? you must have had a big kitchen to swing it.... or you were taking out the back garden for all to see??

lalalonglegs · 26/02/2009 14:38

Yes, read back now and I share your at shagging. It was a full-size one - it was on the landing which was square-shaped.

Weetabix with sugar and butter as a treat?
My mum used to think giving me a spoon of Whiskas catfood was a treat! Mind you, I did used to ask for it. Remember enjoying it too, cold jelly and all...

Hurls at cold (or any) form of cat food....

I used to be put outside the back door to calm down if I was having a tantrum. I remember screaming the street down! When we moved we were put in the car instead - thinking back this was probably because we had nosy neighbours at the second house.

My mum put me in my own room on the opposite side of the house when I was first born and shut the doors. And smoked in the house - I remember playing with the smoke as it made nice patterns, I must have been 4 or 5. I also remember her sitting at the top of the stairs listening for me and my sister chattering instead of sleeping and she set the smoke alarm off.

She also used to sit me in my baby sister's highchair if I misbehaved at the table, when I was 3 or so.

I also remember sitting on adults' laps in the car, and squeezing 4 or 5 in the back as we played "Magic roundabouts" (Going round roundabouts 3 or 4 times until we were all dizzy - to be fair, it was on a quiet road!) - but there would be a tower of children as those on the left would slightly come up off the seats and those on the right would get squashed.

Apparently everyone used to have great fun watching me in a baby walker, whizzing around the room (which probably contained a gas fire, adults smoking, and hot drinks) We also had a slide on concrete slabs (which my sister fell off and knocked herself out - my Dad came home from work to see my mum standing at the door holding her limp body and thought she was dead!)

I remember getting into pyjamas at somebody else's house and coming home in the car all snuggled up under duvets - but I would probably do this now. Would also let DCs go off for the day if I felt they were responsible. (Though would probably be a wuss and give them a mobile phone for emergencies!) We went off to the beach once on holiday and got cut off by the tide but managed to wade across a stream and walk back through the woods. It was dark so I (as the oldest) insisted everyone sing a song in turns to make sure we hadn't lost anyone, and got praised for my initiative when I recounted the tale.

Janos · 26/02/2009 17:47

Smacking!

That's the main thing I can think of.

hatwoman · 26/02/2009 17:47

is sitting a ranting screaming child on the step outside to calm down a modern no no? someone should have told me...

(we are taking child here...not toddler)

I'm not all convinced my parents shagged. I think the stork brought us.

hatwoman · 26/02/2009 17:48

pmsl at magic roundabouts.

atowncalledalice · 26/02/2009 18:05

These are hilarious!

Having my own key from the age of 9 (DB was 7) and coming back from school across a main road alone.

Four kids in the back seat of the car to the Isle of Wight.

In fact, most of the things already mentioned on this thread!

stickybeaker · 26/02/2009 18:49

Does anyone let their kids get into sleeping bags and slide down the stairs...? If you refer to my earlier post we had particularly slippery bags and would go like sh1t off a shovel down the stairs with a good wooden front door at the bottom It's OK though, we put down a pillow to protect it.

At the park today we were remarking on how lovely the spongey surface was, and it reminded me of the 'witches' hat seen in many concrete playgrounds through the 80's. OUCH!

CherryChoc · 26/02/2009 19:09

hatwoman I don't know, I wouldn't do it as I would be paranoid the neighbours would complain.

I was a child not a toddler at the time.

FairyCCTaleEnding · 26/02/2009 19:25

stickybeaker - I used to slide down the stairs in a sleeping bag. Bloody brilliant, especially when they were covered in shiny sisal carpet!

ridingjoker · 26/02/2009 19:31

jumping from the top of wardrobes onto pillows and duvets on the floor.

playing hide and seek dark.

turn all lights off in a room at night. and hide. finder had to hunt around in the pitch dark. we used to take all clothes out cupboard and hide in the drawers in the dark

Frasersmum123 · 26/02/2009 19:33

I was allowed to eat cat-biscuits too, and my mum thought it was hilarious when I ate fish-food flakes!

supergluebum · 26/02/2009 20:04

As far as I remember stickybeaker the purple shiney ones with blue nylon liners from woolies or somesuch place were the best sleeping bags for the job. Light show and the thrill of the ride all in one!

stickybeaker · 26/02/2009 20:14

LOL

We're moving house this weekend - we live in a Victorian Cottage and the stairs are way too steep. I've chosen a new build with a gentle gradient for my DD to have the thrill of a lifetime!

Habbibu · 26/02/2009 20:19

Sitting on rolls of loft insulation in the back of the car.

But my mum and dad were/are brilliant, and I had a very happy childhood. I'll be happy if I can be half as good with dd.

sprinklycheese · 26/02/2009 20:26

Most of our parents would have been charged with neglect by social services if it were today judging by this.

Am truly shocked at some of the home alone type stories. Did they not worry about what would happen if there was a fire?

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 26/02/2009 20:29

I remember as clear as day, although my mam and nain would vehemently deny it, my nain encouraging me have a drag of her ciggie whilst my mam watched. I must have been about 5 or 6 and they would always smoke around me. Twas pretty normal to me then. I would never allow my DS anywhere near ciggie smoke! I can't believe it happened!

GetOrfMoiLand · 26/02/2009 20:48

lolol magic roundabouts

Were your parents a bit squiffy at the time. That's another thing that I remember, everyone used to drive around pissed.

CherryChoc · 26/02/2009 21:04

GetOrf no not in the slightest, my Mum is just like that, she is brill
