HELP! Nappies have gone mouldy, how do I save them?

I have just found a bag containing several wet nappies and one pooey nappy that have obviously been there for a while as they have gone mouldy.

There are a couple of hemp ones in there that are awful - black mould everywhere but the microfibre inners seem to be okay.

Will shoving them through a 95 wash sort them? Is there anything I can add to the wash to help get rid of it? Should I even use them again if there is the possibility that the mould spores are still there?

HELP .

Anyone?

I know it's minging but the bag had fallen down behind a shelving thingy in the utility so I didn't know where it was.

Give them a good hot wash, and then soak in Milton/sterilising solution (gets the stain of the mould out) and then another wash with Napisan.

Should then be fine.

Not that I've ever discovered that DH had filed a bag of wet swimming stuff inc towels in the garage and not found it for weeks, nooooo

I'd bin them, I don't think you could guarantee you had got rid of all the mould spores, and wouldn't want to spread it anywhere else.

I can't say I'd use them again but milton is supposed to kill everything. Argh, what a choice to have to make.

BandMeeting · 26/02/2009 19:21

I think I would just cut my losses tbh - you obv haven't missed them

silverfrog · 26/02/2009 19:24

I'd do a wash to get most of it out, soak in nappy friendly solution (napisan? milton?) then do a super hot wash with extra rinse.

I can't believe anyhting would survive that that shouldn't and my girls are still alive

NorktasticNinja · 26/02/2009 19:32

Being a bit extreme, I'd do what cmot/silverfrog say and then leave them damp in a plastic bag for two or three (or four) days to see if any mold appears.

If not I'd chuck them in with the next nappy wash and carry on as normal.

NorktasticNinja · 26/02/2009 19:33

How come you didn't miss them by the way? Do you have zillions of nappies

Olihan · 03/03/2009 22:37

Thank you all. Have been PC-less for a few days, hence ultra slow reply.

NN, no, not masses . I had been wondering where they'd got to but just couldn't work out where I could have left them.

I've double washed them but they still smell musty so I'll give the MIlton a try and rewash.

Glad I'm not the only one who's done this!

DDs clothes have gone mouldy before, specially when breastfeeding and she would be sick or dribble milk onto her clothes and then I would shove in the washing basket and they would go mouldy very, very quickly. I am good at keeping up with washing but found a few mouldy ones - it was summer so I guess milk and heat just breed mould very quickly.

DDs bib recently went mouldy too.

I have never got it out of anything, but hadn't tried soaking so might try that with the bib.

Hope you get it out. I wouldn't worry too much about the stain, it should eventually come out, just make sure the mould is killed and it isn't spreading. Maybe hang outside for a few days so the sunlight can give them some natural bleaching?
