Should ds be potty trained by 2.5?

DS will be two and a half at the end of the month. He's shown no inclination to be potty trained. Nursery suggested trying him with trainer pants acouple of weeks ago, he screamed the place done and refused to have them on. The next day the managed to get them on (bribery with stickers), but he just carried on as before and wee'd in them. He'll sit on the potty, but won't do anything in it, then get up and wee straight away. Is this normal? any suggestions?

wait a few more months
2.5 is an age to start thinking about it, nothing mroe

Thanks, that's reassuring. You know how it is - MIL saying dh was completely clean before he was 2, the little girl that ds plays with announced 'I want pants' at 22 months, and that was it, job done ...

If it's any consolation my DS2 will be three next month and still isn't fully potty trained. He can wee on the potty but normally doesn't bother. If we use pull-ups he just wees in them.

He's currently back in nappies and I figure I'll give it another concerted effort in a few more weeks.

Try not to get stressed about it - he will do it in his own time .

I would say he is not ready and don't stress about it, the nursery may wish he was potty trained but he doesn't sound as if he wants to be, I would wait at least three months and just introduce the potty getting him to sit on it for longer periods of time

He sounds normal to me, and I agree, not ready yet. We started thinking about potty training DS at around that age, and one thing that I think helped (and DS loved) was this:

When DS gets in the bath, he wees. This is normal. So we used it to get him to notice that he was weeing. We got a plastic cup, and held it by his willy, exclaiming 'oh WOW! look at that! Wee!' He thought it was very funny, and really looked forward to weeing into his cup each bathtime.

At this time, he wouldn't sit on a potty or wear pants at all.

Anyway, fast forward 3 months, he decided he hated nappies, potty trained really easily and when out and about was happy to wee into a plastic bottle (just like his bathtime weeing cup) rather than needing me to faff around with a potty. Result Six months on from the first attempts and he is just beginning to wee in the loo. It will all happen in the end!

Thanks CK, I'll try that one!

I'd wait. We didn't even try with ds1 until he was about 2.8 and he was trained in a matter of days.

And ignore MIL - I think there was far more incentive to nappy train early in the past when both disposables and reusables were not as good as they are now (don't know whether you use reusables or not), and fewer people had good washing machines, tumble driers etc. It is also probably easier with children who use reusables, as they're more aware of what's going on from an earlier age.

ds came out of nappies two weeks before he turned three......didn't even try it before that as he obviously wasn't ready.
