Dd has put on her 5th birthday list:

Camp Rock dvd.

That is all. Not one other thing. Just this DVD.

Bought it today, but have kept the receipt as I feel like I am opening up a world of her lusting after boys and wanting to be a teenager way too young. Disclaimer here - we have not yet got to this bridge of HSM etc, as she has shown no interest whatsoever in non-animated films up to now, so do not know whether they do do this, but judging by the I heart Troy's her friend scrawls EVERYWHERE, and the front cover of CR, they do make the boys v beautiful.

Her friend has all the HSM films, camp rock, Hannah Montana (also 4 y/o, and 6 months younger than dd) and watches them on a loop, so dd has seen them there, but TV is not very big in our house-we watch one dvd a week, or two if she watches my Saturday night film with me (Notting hill/Mamma mia ilk, so she is asleep within mins of it starting!), and doesn't seem to want more.

It just rests uneasily with me, but it is the only thing she wants. Do I wrap it or take it back for Bambi and just say no? She is going to get swallowed up into it all anyway isn't she?

HMMMMMMMMMMMM

I would maybe buy something else and keep it for reserves

so if she bursts into tears and says BUT I WANTED CAMP ROOOOOOOCKKKKKKK MY HEART IS BROOOOKEN then you can say 'Aha! here it is! A surprise ermmmm afternoon present'

Although it would be a step too far for me. I am a bitch with that sort of thing and keep mine in pinafores doing crochet and exclaiming 'golly!' etc

yama · 18/02/2009 20:40

My dd (3) saved up her money from her chores and bought 'high Moo-sical'. She didn't like it.

I guess it wasn't what she thought it'd be - she didn't know what it'd be. It did stop her mentioning it again (hooray).

No advice but you can't prevent the hype affecting them. You can control how often she watches it though.

janeite · 18/02/2009 20:40

I like MP's suggestion. If she doesn't mention it on her birthday then you don't either and then take it back.

She may well get swallowed up in it but why hurry the process?

Phew, tough one.

Part of me wants to say - ban it! Gaffa tape her to a chair and make her repeat 'I heart Bambi' over and over, until she is brainwashed out of it.

But the other part says, don't fight it, perhaps she'll get bored and try and encourage her in other (not as yuck) stuff.

( Glad mine is only 3 and has NO interest whatsoever in anything girly or HSM-y )

You have my empathy!

I've not let mine watch Bambi

It's HORRIFYING

OrmIrian · 18/02/2009 20:43

Too little! Much too little. I have escaped HSM. DD hates 'all that sort of stuff' thankfully and takes a dim view of children that like it (semi-suppressed sneer while they are talking about it).

Keep it back for later. And then accidentally lose it.

Pawslikepaddington · 18/02/2009 20:43

Thanks MP-was expecting a barrage of LET GO FFS!! She's 5!! But I like my Paddington reading, little girl cartoon watching dd (mainly now old 70''s stuff that I have got for £2.99, a la The Flumps and The Raggy Dolls! Much sought after by her friends-it is all they want to do at our house!), I don't want Troy pillows all over her bed yet. I was 13 when I got my iron-on boyband transfer on my pillow! (God bless my long suffering mum!) Am liking the Tra-da! escape route!

Wow, loads of posts now! And all backing me up, hurrah!! She hates HSM, which I internally rejoiced at, but has seen CR and apparently it is the best and coolest thing ever. Along with Clarkstoyshoes-must be said as one word!

Think if she does wail out for it I will exclaim its badness for the whole lounge to hear for every millisecond it is ever on, whilst prancing up and down playing a funkyriffic accordian, and eventually she will get so fed up that she will dissist from watching it! .

Mine has Clarkstoyshoes but I nearly divorced DH over it

morningpaper · 18/02/2009 20:50

Yes I would look at her list and say "Oh really that's so boring, I don't really want you to watch that sort of nonsense all the time. Let's look on the internet for some more interesting toys shall we..."

Pawslikepaddington · 18/02/2009 20:51

I got dd Clarkstoytrainers, felt a little less bad for some reason, but she wore them to school the day after buying them (the school is non uniform and she wanted to take them in for show and tell-she normally wears shoes) and lost both toys. Now she has clarktoyshoes with no toys, and thinks they are the worst invention ever!

I have to confess my DD is 4.5 and has been an avid HSM fan since 3.6. She even has the duvet etc (although it's got all the characters on and she had to save her Easter/pocket money to get it).

I have sometimes kicked myself for letting her get into that sort of thing too young (we had about 8 months of begging before I cracked and let her watch Hannah Montana the other week when she was poorly with chicken pox), but it's very chaste stuff - it is Disney after all, the only issue I have is with the somewhat stroppy teenage attitudes of some characters, although they are usually the ones that get their comeuppance in the end.

BTW DD still loves her cartoon and CBeebies and would happily watch the whole 2 hours of Nick Classics if I'd let her

cory · 18/02/2009 20:58

I have sometimes taken the precaution of letting dcs know in advance that they won't be getting such and such. Sometimes with a reason- you're a bit young, or it's a bit expensive, or you know I don't really like that sort of thing. Saves spoiling the day.

Pawslikepaddington · 18/02/2009 21:44

Thank you all-and wombling-don't worry-dd's friend's little (2 y/o) sis wants to be Sharpay!

I looked at the spine and it is a U, whereas she has watched PG's before, so it is a silly aversion really, but for some reason it is there [weird mummy hypocracy emoticon].

Poledra · 18/02/2009 21:56

Just another voice agreeing with you here - DD1 was 5 lat month, and fortunately asked for a board game and some books . She was going to a birthday party not long after and bought HSM for the little girl in question because 'she really likes it Mummy. It's dead boring, but she likes it.'

I have already got her warned that Bratz will Not be Allowed Over My Door.

Poledra · 18/02/2009 21:57

..HSM stuff for the little girl...

MollieO · 18/02/2009 22:37

Ds not allowed Clarkshoetoys (and hasn't pushed the point). I've never heard of Camp Rock. Guess it is a girl thing. Have escaped HSM too!

Pawslikepaddington · 18/02/2009 22:39

They are pants Mollie-we are back to loving the patent leather shoes thank goodness! Am so happy that I am not overly silly about this, thank you.

Tryharder · 18/02/2009 23:34

I sat down on xmas eve and MADE DS1 (aged 4) sit and watch HSM with me (wanted to see what all the fuss was about). We managed about 10 minutes before we were bored and turned it off.... my friend's little girl (aged 5) is into it though and has all the cushions/duvets/tshirts etc...

At the risk of sounding pathetic, are the Clarkshoetoys the little cars hidden inside the shoes? DS1 has a pair of those shoes but hasn't realised there's a toy inside so I guess it's still in there...

womblingfree · 19/02/2009 14:46

Polendra - am with you on Bratz they are truly hideous, yet I know another Mum who has no problem withthem because they are so far removed from 'real life' she feels they won'y have any influnce on her girls.

I actually went along with DD's request for an HSM bedroom, cos it was due for redecorating and it was either that ort her spending her money on one of those awful singing dolls, which I knew would be on the scrapheap within days.

At least she still loves her bedroom a year later...

MrsBoo · 19/02/2009 14:56

Someone bought my DD (just 5) the CampRock DVD - it was way too old for her - and she didnt even want to watch it.
She is familiar with HSM, as she learns some of the songs at a class she goes to - but so far hasn't shown any interest in having to get the DVD's (thank goodness) FFS they are set in a high school - surely aimed at older girls.
Fortunatley my DD still likes cbeebies and childrens DVDs.
