DISPOSABLE NAPPY APPRECIATION THREAD - Sod the landfill! Come here to sing their praises!

There are some of us who think reusable nappies are an eco-conspiracy con designed to get mothers firmly back at the kitchen sink feeling guilty.

There are others of us who have stopped using reusables because our children developed dread diseases of the bottom area.

Some of us even gag at the thought of dealing with all the poo manually, instead of just cursorarily flinging a bit down the loo and then bunging the whole affair in a nice scented nappy sack.

Come join with us if you too are heartily grateful for disposable nappies and the liberation they bring.

It is obligatory for little boys to fiddle with their willies!

Boffin... animals crap everywhere and that doesn't make nasty stuff leak into the water supply.... I am really not convinced...

BoffinMum · 17/02/2009 22:06

Schulte, strangely in this case it's something to do with the legality of what you are allowed to put into landfill, and a concern about polio vaccinations and so on, if I remember rightly. Let me have a think about how I know this.

So if someone went through my bin like they do in Germany and found some poo in there I'd be fined?

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:07

Silk nappy liners are excellent to help heal up nappy rash, and I think you can get ones with silver in too.

I think children are more prone to rashes at different times and different creams/nappies that suit will vary. Just because they may suffer with bad rashes with reusables at some point, you don't necessarily have to ditch them forever.

Schulte · 17/02/2009 22:08

Jailed even?

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:08

The polio thing is out of date. I just don't think you are supposed to put poo in the bin, that is what toilets are for, surely??

Schulte · 17/02/2009 22:08

Ha ha Washersaurus you're not giving up!

Schulte · 17/02/2009 22:09

So... those doggy poo bins... what happens to them?

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:09

I like a balanced discussion

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:11

So isn't anyone else bothered by all the character marketing on their disposable nappies?

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 17/02/2009 22:13

nope, dont really pay attention to it

BoffinMum · 17/02/2009 22:13

It appears to be a question of leachates contaminating ground water - same with any biological waste like dog poo, soiled dressings and so on. It can ultimately affect the quality of the water locally and transmit pathogens. So scraping is good.

Washersaurus - I mentioned that 17 minutes ago!

As I love my disposables though I'm rising above it....

cali · 17/02/2009 22:16

Washersaurus, as far as I'm concerned you are flogging a dead horse, I gave away all my reusables a year ago and have no intention of buying any more.

I have 1 in the house, a motherease, that I'll use if dd2 needs her nappy changed in the couple of hours before she has her bath.

dd2 has other issues with her skin and this probably predisposed her to reacting badly to reusables, even with changing her frequently.

didn't work for us at all.

and as I said earlier, I refuse to persevere with something that causes pain and distress to my child, just because it is deemed the "right" thing to do.

cali · 17/02/2009 22:17

there is no character marketing on Wiona's, try again!!

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:17

Oh sorry NL, I obviously missed it in the midst of heated discussion.

I think it is really bad, it is one of the reasons I don't like disposables generally. Lidl's nappies have cute cartoony animals and stuff on them. I rebel against having to buy anything directly marketed at my children.

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:18

Oh get over yerself cali. I DO have something to offer this discussion whether you like it or not.

I'm not flogging anything, just discussing my experiences generally.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 17/02/2009 22:19

lol I like looking at tigger

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:19

I meant I don't mind the cartoony stuff on the Lidl ones, but hesitate to buy disney emblazoned stuff etc.

SmuttyNuttyTaff · 17/02/2009 22:20

i'm a big kid really, do excuse me.

NorthernLurker · 17/02/2009 22:20

Sesame street is wasted on dd3 though - she has no idea what it's about! Now if it was the Night garden....

Don't worry about not seeing my post Washersaurus - I'm imagining you looking at your pc through a blindfold cunningly fashioned from a flexitot hotbot or whatever they're called - and I can see that would make things hard

Actually seriously - do you not think that reusables have some very odd names??

cali · 17/02/2009 22:20

Ha, that's rich, having read your earlier posts!!

those of us who use disposables also have something to add to a thread that is entitled "Disposable Nappy Appreciation Thread"

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:22

I'm not up to date with all the new fangled types I'm afraid. Mine are all old shaped terry towelling ones.

Hmmm, am now considering fashioning myself a super hero/villain disguise using fleece liners etc.

Washersaurus · 17/02/2009 22:24

I am taking part in an online discussion - there are good and bad things about both types of nappy. Why do you believe that I shouldn't be allowed to discuss my experiences and clear up common misbeliefs about washables?
