Am I being unreasonable to be irritated by this?

My 18 month old DS has started to really like "helping" me in the kitchen. I went to the store to get him some kitchen toys, and every...single...thing...was pink or lavender! Even the pretend food came in pink baskets! Don't get me wrong, I don't care if my kid plays with pink toys, but what's the deal? I mean, who actually HAS a pink stove in real life anyway? I know it's not a huge deal, but it was irritating. So now he has all these pink gingham baskets.

No you aren't. Try Ikea.

ContainsMildPeril · 17/02/2009 16:54

And so it begins SamsMama. I really struggled to get sticker makers for my DSs (6&8) that weren't pink and fairy themed. Ended up getting them a proper laminator.

As someone said the other day - you only have to look at a pair of jeans to tell what sex they're aimed for. It's gotten ridiculous.

Tamarto · 17/02/2009 16:57

Last time i looked i couldn't see much pink things DD is a very very girlie girl and after two boys who am i to deny her

It is ridiculous how gender specific certain toy are though.

11 years ago when I had DD1, most things like that in ELC at least came in bright primary colours. Five years later when I had DD3 it was a sea of pink and lilac. I don't get it at all.

kitbit · 17/02/2009 17:04

ELC have some green and turquoise ones I think, ds got one for Xmas last year and I think they still have them?
..or Ikea, yes

ComeWhineWithMe · 17/02/2009 17:04

IKEA is a good idea, I didn't think of that. I'm not sure if it's different here (I'm American) or not. I was looking at Target. Sounds like it's mostly the same deal over there, though. Like LadyGlencoraPalliser said, it doesn't seem like this was always the case...I remember the stove I had when I was little was white. Are we becoming less progressive?

And even if you have a dd you don't want everything they have to be bubblegum pink!

chegirl · 17/02/2009 17:50

I have a pink stove . Its bloody lovely actually.

But I do agree with the OP. I LOVE pink but I think it puts my boys playing with certain toys. They like pink too but they dont really want a pink iron or broom. They would prefer a red one.

angel1976 · 17/02/2009 19:35

I was at Ikea recently and was severely tempted by a set of pots and pans (with lids) they had. They were metal ones too, really lovely, think it was £8+.

OrmIrian · 17/02/2009 20:02

And they have real china cups and saucers and little wooden utensils. Bought loads for DS#1. No-one plays with them anyore

chegirl · 17/02/2009 20:23

I saw all that lovely stuff at Ikea too. I was debating getting it. Then I had my fortnightly fossik around the charity shops. Those little cups and things were in 4 out of five of the shops I went in! Seems us parents enjoy them more than the kid

BananaFruitBat · 17/02/2009 20:25

'The Entertainer' toy shop has a blue/red/grey one. £19.99.

zipzap · 18/02/2009 01:37

Asda and Sainsburys both have sets that are primary coloured and can be either boy or girl, my ds has the tea set and loves it from asda. They also do a great pots and pans set that is proper little metal pans and utensils, looks good quality. All big bargains - think about a fiver for a tea set, less than a tenner for the metal pan set and the food (which admittedly came in a purple canister, but not a girly purple IYSWIM) also less than a tenner.

have also got the ordinary ikea picnic sets of 6 plates/bowls/cutlery for 99p and the little matching trays, get used daily for so many things beyond food and play food that I think we currently have 3 sets of bowls and 3 sets of plates on the go . the ikea set of lots of tupperware stuff is good for lots all sorts of playing - stacking, pouring, storing, making shaky noisy things, banging, etc etc, have had to get one for me for food stuff, one for ds to play with!
