When my boys were babies I used to give them calpol with a syringe.

i usually act on the principle that if they are well enough to resist, they'll probably be OK without calpol!

Have you tried a syringe?

bellavita · 17/02/2009 15:04

obviously, does not mean they are necessarily going to swallow it, but at least you can point it to the back of the mouth better in the hope that some will go down (with a cough and a splutter )

I don't know if this helps but...we have always found it much easier to give calpol a tiny amount at a time using a plastic syringe (can usually buy these from the pharmacist) as opposed to a spoon - waiting each time until he has swallowed it. Hope you have some sucess soon.

hi thanks for responses...yes, tried a syringe he simply keeps it in his throat then gently returns it back to me! he has just had last set of the first jabs and gets bad temperatures so desperate to be able to bring it down for him tonight and tomorrow.

Slip the syringe down along his gums and into his cheek and small amounts at a time. If that doesn't work I'm stumped.

I use to mix it in with a small bit of fromage frais as DS loved that

memoo - way to go I think in this instance.

christiana - did not even know you could get those!

Dalrymps · 17/02/2009 15:55

I have to mix it in to ds juice, I usually add a bit of fresh fruit juice to disguise the flavour a bit then top it up with water.

my ds hates calpol so i got him some medinol instead (not medised!) it's exactly the same stuff but it's white not pink and he takes that fine. maybe he doesn't like the taste?

shawad · 19/02/2009 07:51

My DS hates calpol - he gets really wound up if I try to give it to him, and usually ends up vomiting if I do get it down his throat.

Changed to Nurofen (either orange or strawberry seems fine), which has a much milder 'taste' and isn't as sticky. It comes with a syringe, and he usually sucks that dry when I give it to him.

Agree with Christiana- Paracetamol suppositories are far easier, and work very quickly, and aren't filled with e-numbers. You need to be confident when using them though. You can get special ones for babies

I always use suppository too (for babies lol), also advantage that it works much much quicker than syrup as it's absorbed straight away into blood stream rather than sitting in tummy
