I'm really p'd off with OH. I ask him to spend half an hour with the kids and I find him playing pool with the footy on the radio whilst the kids are in the same room trying to amuse themselves! Is it just my OH thats useless at communicating with the kids?

Nope, mine is shit too. I think it's a bloke thing. I feel like smacking mine round the head with his computer keyboard most days while he taps away ignoring the kids

I don't know whether to be elated that I'm not the only one or thoroughly depressed! Poor kids!

Mine is too busy looking after his needs to notice what I'm typing. I'm more p'd off because he doesn't even support the teams he was listening too. Grrr

"Nope, mine is shit too. I think it's a bloke thing."
Not true at all and a poor excuse for a lot of fathers' pure laziness when it comes to their children.
This might piss people people off, but my DH is wonderful with our DS (22 months old) and always has been.
He plays with him in the house, takes him for walks and has one day off everyday with him alone - and loves it. Thye have a great bond I know a lot of other fathers and children don't have.
Get them to get off their arses and have fun with their kids; they're missing out on loads otherwise.

homicidalmatriach · 17/02/2009 09:18

I agree Gateau they are missing out but how would they know if they won't make the effort. You can lead a man to a child but you can't force interaction. DH is mostly good but sometimes he just wanders off and forgets them.

Perhaps because they are too young for him to have a proper conversation with them.

notyummy · 17/02/2009 09:21

DH is also great with dd(2.7). He spends less time alone with her,as I work 4 days and he does 5, however is great with her. Last weekend took her to the toy library and the library, and to her swimming lesson on Friday afternoon.

2pt4kids · 17/02/2009 09:22

My DH is terrible at using his initiatve when stuck indoors with the boys. He often ends up on his laptop or watching TV while they run around him amusing themselves.
He admits as much too.
If I ask him to take them to the park or take them to soft play or go out on their bikes or anything that basically tells him what to do, he'll do it and really enjoy it!

Gateau · 17/02/2009 09:25

Proper conversation isn't need when they are young; it's all about fun, fun, fun.
And it doesn't have to be confined to the house: there's swimming, going out on bikes, walking, playgrounds, softplay; the list is endless.
There is no excuse for a father not spending enough time with his kids, or not wanting to: I would take serious issue with my DH if he didn't. And someone who can't spend AT THE VERY LEAST half an hour with them is pathetic- which is what the OP is complaining about.
