How do you persuade a non-hungry 2 year old to have breakfast before nursery??

If the nursery doesn't offer anything before mid morning snack (actually it's a montessori school)?

DD doesn't usually get hungry until she's been up for 1.5 to 2 hours and it starts at 8:30...with a drop off for DS before then.

does he have a morning drink of milk? if he does cut it right down.. ( sorry if you've done this already)
you could also try to sit with him and eat, and offer him different things like crossiants or crumpets rather than cereals...

noonki · 14/02/2009 21:05

just offer and if they dont eat there's really nought you can do.

If you make an issue of it at this age it will become one.

We she eat on the way to nursery?

I've cut her milk right down to half a bottle but can of course reduce it further and she absolutely won't consider going without it. Good idea on the croissant idea though I do think they're nutritional value is approximately zero (I do love them).

Agree with try anything, a crossiant is better than nothing, esp. if the rest of hr diet is balanced

It's going to be a bit tricky to eat en route as I need to leave the buggy with DS when I drop him off (he's 7 months) and then hare up the road with DD for a 10 minute walk (an adults 10 minutes) - am considering shoulder rides as the only option!

Or pain au chocolat?

Make a big fuss of going to the supermarket and letting pick out his own cereal, perhaps buy him a special cereal bowl.

Picky bits like dried apricots/raisins/oat cakes/bread sticks that you can put in a little pot for her to nibble on.

AitchTwoOh · 14/02/2009 21:13

agree with oatcakes, home made granola bars, flapjacks. if we're in a rush dd often gets a banana on the run.

SalmonintheLiffey · 14/02/2009 21:15

I send my little guy in to creche with a small handful of shreddies in a sandwich bag.

Thankyouandgoodnight · 14/02/2009 21:16

oooh now then I do like the idea of picky bits. I've always been very relaxed about their eating and they can eat if they're hungry and not if not etc BUT she's always been in a situation whereby there's food of some sort on offer every 1.5 hours or so. I now find myself going down the route of neurotichowmuchhaveyoueatenmother .

i sometimes have to chop up an apple which ds2 eats on the way to nursery, he has been a bit funny about breakfast this week and not wanted it, apart from his apple. we have a 40 min drive to work/nursery in the morning and breakfast finishes at 8.15 and as we get there at 8.20ish he is to late.
a fruit bag is the only way to go with ds2 in the morning.

SalmonintheLiffey · 14/02/2009 21:20

I remember being a bit crazed trying to make my dc1 drink before we left the house and she just wouldn't. I got so crazy. I wouldn't dream of being like that with dc2. God I was nuts.

DS takes a little bag of cornflakes/raisins and dried apricots (sweeties!) that he munchies on the way to nursery.
