Is this the same as 'going to X's house for tea' used to be circa 1978?

Whilst on holiday in Florida last year, my boys got friendly with another boy and his dad came over and said to us "hey can your boys come over for a play date to our apartment?"

Bearing in mind that DS1 was 11 and DS2 nearly 9, I thought it sounded rather "babyish" but the family were american.
