6 month old seems bored, unless we're out cavorting.

Is it just me or are there other 6 month old's like this?? My dd is only really happy if out and about with lots of kids and noise around. For a couple of months if we do stay at home for the day, dd gets whingy and a bit stroppy, and seems almost bored. She can sit up now, so does play with her toys, and we do play in between her naps. But she just gets bored of it quite quickly. If we're out and about in playgroups or at my mums etc dd seems thrilled, and is very happy. My cousins boy is also 6 months and seems a lot calmer and easily pleased. Is any one elses babies like this. Im not viewing it as a problem, i just find it really tiring sometimes when i would just like to stay in for a day, but then thats harder work trying to hold off the whinging.

Ds1 is like this, and still is aged nearly 6. Ds2 will setlle himself in, get his toys out, watch tv, but ds1 has never been happy when cooped up in the house. She'll relax when she can move herself around a bit on her own.

MrsTittleMouse · 14/02/2009 10:07

I had a baby like your DD (looks like DD2 will be the same too). The good news is that DD1 has been easier and easier the older that she becomes and the more that she can do for herself. She's not easy mind you, there hasn't been a complete personality transplant! I do think that being sociable and energetic will stand her in good stead in later life too.

clarabell16 · 14/02/2009 10:20

Many thanks for your replies, ah there are others out there! maybe their personalities may mean they'll be more likely to play for long periods of time with friends when their older and we'll get some peace!!. It does seem dd is never relaxed apart from when sleeping, shes been refusing cuddling since i can remember now, and the only place she'll bf is in the bath, she seems constantly on the alert for some excitement or new people. Am just a bit bemused by it all, myself and partner are homely and calm (lazy and happy eating infront of the tv (blush)) Righto, got to get ready for another outing.....

We were both calm, contented babies too, and thoroughly convinced that we would have children just like us. It's come as a bit of a shock to have two like this! But, as I say, I think that it's no bad thing for them as they get older to like company and be a bit more gregarious than I used to be.

papoose · 14/02/2009 11:21

Hello, can I ask have you got a Fisher Price Jumperoo? They are excellent - my DD loves hers and it really keeps her occupied (although at 3 months she is really too young as her legs don't hit the floor yet!). They are c £85 new, but we got ours for half that from Ebay.

KTNoo · 14/02/2009 15:38

My dd1 was like this. She was very hard work from the beginning. She cried and cried unless she was entertained constantly. When she was a week old she cried when the car had to stop at traffic lights then stopped crying when we started moving and things became interesting again.

It comforts me that she's a bright kid, but she's still quite high-maintenance.

It might get easier once she crawls - my dd crawled before she sat at 6 months and was happier as she could go and find her own fun, although then she got into everything!

I used to go out everyday at least once, twice is even better! Just a walk, to shops, whatever. Also once your dd gets nearer a year you can go to the swings, read stories, let her feed herself etc.

It does get easier!

Fennel · 14/02/2009 16:57

My 3 were all like this and I think of two of them as particularly easy babies - but they were all happier if we went out and about a lot. I used to go out twice a day with all of them at that age. Far easier than staying in.

Luckily I like going out so we were all happy. But I thought every baby was like this, even the easy ones.

Now we can stay in all day quite happily, but that's now they are all school age. I never tried to do it with preschoolers.

MrsTittleMouse · 14/02/2009 18:39

The "not easy" part was mostly because I have children who think that sleep is optional. When I get a full night's sleep then I am very happy to rush around entertaining, but it does get a bit much when you're up four times in the night too! And then I wish for babies who like to sit quietly and watch me drink tea.

clarabell16 · 14/02/2009 19:08

Oh my god KTNoo , i thought i was the only one that suffered 'car stopping rage'! everytime the car stopped and or she sensed it slowing down, she would completely crack up. Now though as she is older, she gets a toy to play with in the car which usually stops any fuss. I am very used to going out and about now mostly everyday and do enjoy it, and try and time my days in when my dp has days off. Am glad there are other babies like mine out there!! thanks everyone for your replies, all my friends seem to have babies who are not bothered either way, and will lay in their bouncers playing with a toy, while they enjoy the mythical nice cup of tea, the not too hot, not too cold one, whats that??. Im off to the swimming pool tomorrow with her which will have loads of screaming kids splashing so she'll be happy. Sorry papoose, she was not impressed with jumperoo unfortunately, she prefers the 24lb of her to be manually thrown up and down, usually by a very tired adult

Don't worry she doesn't cry when the car stops anymore - now she complains about my choice of driving music.

Pinkglow · 14/02/2009 19:25

I have a 3 month who has car rage too. Thankfully me and DH are the kind of ppl who like going out and about. This week the only days hes been abit grumpy are the days ive stayed in, hense why ive booked him into swimming groups and play groups.

MrsTittleMouse · 14/02/2009 19:52

Both of ours have had car-stop rage. Most embarrassing was when DD1 had bus-stop rage. Every traffic light, every bus stop... the poor driver was very glad when we got off.

TaurielTest · 14/02/2009 21:29

My DS is like this too - and now he can crawl... There's a book by William and Martha Sears about what they call high-need babies in the local library, I think it's called something like "Fussy Baby book". Quite interesting I thought.

mrsgboring · 14/02/2009 21:55

Yes, my DS was kind of like this and kind of still is, aged 3, though these days he's happy to stay in (prefers it in fact) provided he's free to create mayhem across the whole floor with household objects.

It used to amaze me going to the houses of people with toddlers the same age - they'd have a pen next to the phone and no drawing on the walls! (or dismembered biros on floor) Come to that they had a phone at child height and weren't routinely visited by angry firemen. Waste paper baskets on the floor as opposed to behind a locked door! What was wrong with their children??? DS always moved so quickly and was fiendishly into anything and everything.

I love it. Would far rather have a child like this than a very very placid baby who can't cope with the noise of a toddler group or the crowds on a busy outing.

KTNoo · 15/02/2009 10:30

I agree MrsBoring. I sometimes go to soft play with my friend - my 3 are off the minute we're in and her 2 just cling to her legs and it takes so much of her energy to persuade them onto the trampoline or whatever. She's far more patient than i would be - I'd be telling them "I've paid for this - now go and PLAY!!"

Having said that when she comes to our house she sits her 2-year old next to her on the sofa and gives her one toy which she plays with for about half and hour without moving or saying anything, leaving my friend to drink tea. Not like this when we go to theirs. My 2 year old is everywhere (and she's not even the one I was describing above!), asking questions, interrupting, taking everything out and generally getting into trouble. I think my friend thinks I haven't got a clue how to bring up kids.

Maria2007 · 15/02/2009 10:34

My boy is 6 & a half months & also gets easily bored & likes to be entertained most of the time! He's not usually very happy occupying himself on his playmat. Gets frustrated because he's trying to crawl (has managed, up to a point) but can't manage as quickly as he wants. It's exhausting... but at least it's nice to see that he has such an appetite for life & for doing lively, interesting things.

clarabell16 · 15/02/2009 14:08

pmsl at bus stop rage and angry firemen incidents!! probably not very funny for you at the time though.... hmmm ive got it all to come.
I used to dread red lights, id spot one coming up to it and think 'f**k', and zebra crossing at school times. nightmare.
KTNoo -one toy half hour and no whinging, am in shock! I do like her being so lively and energetic, when we take her places and shes not fazed at all. Im back in work next week for 2 days while my mother looks after her, am torn between relieved i'll have a break from being dd butlins entertainer, and laughingly feeling sorry for my mother. All my mothers children me included have liked laying in a bouncer playing with tags on clothes. I think a big shock is coming.....

Think your mum will be doing some walking! By the way there is knack to red lights involving being very on the ball and slowing down but not actually stopping, then gradually speeding up once light turns to green. Frustrates hell out of motorists behind, but who cares?

Believe me it's hard work for you now but it will be so much easier for you to leave her with friends or at playgroups because she likes the social contact. And it does get better - actually all 3 of mine are still pretty demanding (basic personailty does not change imo) but the difference now is I tell them to go and leave me alone sometimes!

And they go to school....
