Feel so bad - last night the tooth fairy forgot my dd!

dd's tooth fell out yesterday evening, was put under pillow, this morning she came through saying "Mummy! The tooth fairy forgot me!"

I feel awful. Not an excuse but....we were out late at her dance show, home at 10pm, 3 dc under 7, all alone as dh working away, basically got them to bed then collapsed myself, and forgot the all-important cash payment!

What should I say to her? I asked her if she wanted to put it under her pillow again tonight or just have the money from me, and she chose second option. So she's been paid (rather overpaid, actually, due to guilt), but should I shatter the illusion now?

Sometimes to tooth fairy gets befuddled and puts the cash under the wrong pillow. Has she checked everyone else's pillow?

MrsTittleMouse · 13/02/2009 19:06

Can the tooth fairy write her a note (in teeny tiny tooth-fairy writing) explaining what the problem was (hurt her wing?)?

I'm sure that someone else on MN has written tooth fairy notes to explain why there has been a delay.

I told DD that the toothfairy was at aparty, had got drunk and forgot to collect teeth that night.

when I later told her that toothfairy coolects teeth and melts them down to make dentures for grannies she now keeps her lost teeth in a small box and refuses to entertain the tooth fairy.

Don't worry - the Tooth Fairy is often a bit hit and miss around here. She's a busy fairy with a lot to do and a short memory, but will get there the next night at the latest. DCs have accepted this completely.

piratecat · 13/02/2009 19:07

i did this 2 teeth ago, i felt awful.

I just said, oh dear maybe you could it put it there tonight. In the end she said she'd like to keep the tooth, and leave a note for the fiary that night.
She was really chuffed to have both the tooth and a quid!!

BUT she was very upset the fairy hadn't been!!

sagacious · 13/02/2009 19:07

I did this not once, but two times in a row.

Cue a very loud one way telephone conversation, asking to speak to the tooth fairys boss who explained the tooth fairy was off sick and the replacement didn't get the message

ds got a bonus payment from the stand in by way of apology

piratecat · 13/02/2009 19:09

you could put the money there after aswell, when you go in and say 'are you sure yuo checked properly?''' Then say ooh look here it is, oh that silly fairy, left you the money and forgot the tooth!!'

KTNoo · 13/02/2009 19:10

So go with the story then. Ironic thing is that dh (who believes Santa is quite enough lying and will not do tooth fairies or easter bunnies) told her when her first tooth fell out that the tooth fairy is not real but she refused to believe him. When he was a child they handed their lost teeth over to their dad in exchange for money. I wonder if he got them all made into a necklace?

i got a tiny letter of apology from the tooth fairy when this happened to me. it was magical! kept me believing for a good while longer!

KTNoo · 13/02/2009 19:22

I do feel bad about it but wonder if this might be good opportunity to come clean? Never liked this lie all that much - only went along with it because she wanted it. She's 7 but quite mature and cynical.

I forgot with one of DD's teeth last summer.

The following night I typed a letter in an incredibly small typeface and printed it out to pop under her pillow with the money -the letter was very apologetic and IIRC blamed the severe weather we were having at the time (it was the time of the floods everywhere araound here).

DD still has the letter somewhere safe.

Jux · 13/02/2009 19:26

the tooth fairy was really really really busy one night and simply didn't ran out of time and never made it as far as our place - she came to our town absolutely first thing the next night though.

slummymummy36 · 13/02/2009 20:19

I have forgotten several times. I now tell my girls to put tooth under their pillow and just say the tooth fairy is so small she can only carry 1 tooth at a time. If she is busy she may not come the first night it is under the pillow. Seems to have been accepted OK by the girls and it lets me off the hook for a night or 2 if I forget!

So no-one thinks I should tell her the truth? I think all your ideas are wonderful, but I would feel such a fraud to tell her a story like that. Is it so bad to come clean?

sometimes they half know but want to believe. not enough magic in the world...i'd personally keep it up but answer honestly if she asks outright...but that's just me

KTNoo · 13/02/2009 21:17

I think that's it exactly babyphat. She knows, I think, and I thought this might be a good time to put an end to the pretence, but she hasn't asked me directly, and I haven't told her outright...yet.

Her dad has though. He'll be back later tontigh - maybe I'll leave it to him!

Oh good grief - that was obviously supposed to say tonight.

Sometimes the tooth fairy has too many to carry and has to come back the next night

reluctantmpvdriver · 13/02/2009 22:26

We managed to carry over the story that the tooth fairy had got lost for several forgetful nights - lots of signs and posters saying 'tooth fairy' this way - finally did the trick.
